1850 - The Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 made California into a free state, banned the slave trade in Washington D.C, enforced a stricter fugitive slave law, divided the Mexican cession into Utah and New Mexico, and had them practice popular sovereignty.

1852 - Uncle Tom's Cabin

Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book criticized slavery by showing the perspective of a slave family and how the conditions they lived in were inhumane.

1854 - Bleeding Kansas

1857 - Dred Scott Case

1860 - Lincoln's Election

In 1860, during the peak of slavery, Abraham Lincoln ran for president and won. This caused the south to separate from the union and form the Confederate States of America.

1861 - Civil War

Shortly after Lincoln won the presidency and the confederacy was made, the north fought the south to abolish slavery, and the south fought the north to keep slavery. This divided America, and many lives were lost. Ultimately, the union won due to their resources and the confederacy collapsed.

1863 - Gettysburg Address

The Gettysburg Address was given by Abraham Lincoln after the union won the Civil War. He said that everyone in America should be treated as equal, and praised those who died for the war.

1867 - Reconstruction Acts

After the Civil War, the union imposed strict regulations on the south to have them return to the union. This of course split the south, and made them resent the north.

1867 - Purchase of Alaska

1876 - Telephone Invented

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. This invention helped communication be faster and more efficient, and changed the trajectory of how people would communicate forever.

1886 - Haymarket Bombing

The Haymarket Bombing was a protest against police violence in Haymarket Square, Chicago. Then, someone threw a bomb that killed a policeman and injured others. This event led people to start to dislike the idea of labor.

1887 - Dawes Act

The Dawes Act broke up Native American reservations, and redistributed Native land to others. They promised to grant Native Americans citizenship and outlawed tribal ownership. This was used to assimilate natives into the american culture.

1894 - Pullman Strike

The Pullman Strike was a strike caused by railroad workers after their wages were cut drastically. This forced the government to step in and jail the leader. Ultimately just like the Haymarket Bombing, it decreased support of labor.

1896 - Plessy v. Ferguson

The Plessy v. Ferguson case formed the next few years of African American history by supporting Jim Crow laws that allowed "separate but equal" establishments. This lead to segregation and affected many people.

1898 - Spanish American War

The Spanish American War was fought between the U.S., The Philippines, Spain, and took place in Cuba. Cuba gained its independence. The U.S. also annexed Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and Guam. This helped America gain full control of the western hemisphere, after defeating Spain's empire.

The annexation of Hawaii helped the U.S gain pacific territory to implement a military base. It also helped bring economic advancements to the U.S. However, native Hawaiians lost their land and lost their culture due to it.

1901 - McKinley's Assassination

1914 - Construction of Panama Canal Begins

The Panama Canal helped the U.S to have a quicker passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. To this day, the Panama Canal helps transport massive amounts of goods all throughout the world.
