Jonas {the main character} is having mixed feelings about the ceremony of Twelve that is taking place in just a couple of days, in {December}. Jonas at first, was frightened. But then he decided that was the wrong word; he decided he felt apprehensive. He changed his mind about how he felt because last year a fighter plane had flown over the community {which was something that was a big no-no.} and then, he felt frightened. It turned out being a beginner pilot that made a mistake and then got released. Jonas explained that being released is the worst form of punishment. When you get released from the community it's considered very devastating because it is a "privilege" to be able to live in the community. There are two different types of release that aren't considered punishment; release of Elders and of Newborns.
Question:
In chapter one Jonas has said how the night Nurtures were put to the night time shift because they weren’t friendly, or worthy of daytime hours and most of the time they didn’t have family units. My questions is that how do people become worthy of getting a spouse and kids and who decides who is going to be “assigned to who”..?

Why is it banned to fly over the community with cargo/fighter or any type of plane..? Is it something they are trying to hide from the citizens of the community?
Relations
In The Community the Twelves have to get a certain amount of volunteer work done; same with high schoolers in Canada

Jonas and his Mother an Father sit down at their meal table and started discussing Jonas's feelings about the ceremony of Twelve. Father says to Jonas how "exciting" the ceremony was for him when he was an Eleven. Jonas is reminded of the ceremonies he had attended when he was younger; especially the one when they received Lily. Jonas also reveals that there are 50 children that are born each year. Jonas also tells us how the naming how the naming goes. For Lily they gave her to her "parents" and said "Child number 23; Lily.". Father had confessed to Jonas saying he had looked at the naming list the year they were given Lily and he was in awe. Looking at a naming list in our society doesn't seem like that big of a deal; but in the community it is punishable. I learned that when you turn into a 9 you get a bike and if you are a girl you also get your hair ribbons taken out. I assume that have their hair in braids before they get the ribbons taken out. The talk about the rule being changed for what age you should be able to get your bike and all rules get changed by the Committee of Elders. But they will never ask for that rule to be changed because it's too small of a thing to disturb the Elders with. I also learned that you are assigned your job by the Elders and what you do in your free time.
Question:
How do they choose the names for the children? And are there repeated names or does everyone have a different name?
Do the Elders live forever? Because if not, I highly doubt that they never get released/die, how do thy new Elders get selected? Maybe new Elders are chosen secretly and the Committee of Elders names or faces are shown so nobody really knows who they are?
Relations:
Our jobs are based off of things we like to do such as if you like to tutor younger children you might consider going into the teaching field and in the iver it is similar to this. Based off of what you do in your "free-time" is related to what you are assigned to.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/child-policies-across-the-world-from-those-imposing-restrictions-to-others-offering-incentives-to-have-more-kids/articleshow/58199912.cms
In this article, a couple of scrolls down, it says "In Iraq 1998, the government discouraged having more than 2 children, fearing an economic crisis fueled by a ballooning population". This somewhat relates to the Giver because they could be controlling the population .

Chapter 3 starts off with Father bringing a new child home. Lily observed how Gabriel and Jonas have the same eyes and Lily says they might have the same birth mother. Almost every person in the community has brown or dark eyes. Lily notices Gabe's comfort object named Hippo and she says it as if she is trying to figure out what it is.Jonas states that having blue eyes is rare in the community and that they give a sense of Depth. I also learned that mirrors are rare and Jonas says if he comes by one he usually doesn't look at himself. While playing with the New Child Lily remarks that she would want to be a Birth Mother. She is scolded by her mother for saying that since there is very little honor is that particular job.
Birth Mothers are only allowed to have three children and once given birth to all of them they have to go to hard labor camps until they reach the house of the old. In the town there are jobs called "Speakers" where you observe the community and then make announcements or reminders based off of what they see happening. Last week Jonas had taken an apple from the Recreation area and an announcement had been made telling everyone that snacks are to be eaten not hoarded. Later on Jonas and Asher had been tossing the apple and Jonas noticed something weird about it. Jonas described it "changed in mid-air". He didn't know what was different but something changed. He asked Asher but he saw nothing change. It happened 4 times. He looked around testing his eyesight by squinting at things on his shirt. He took the apple home and observed it thoroughly.
Question:
Why are blue eyes so rare? My question is that has something in relation to what Hitler did happen in the community? Because why would the majority of people have dark eyes then, Jonas who seems to have something special about him, have lighter blue-ish eyes?
How do you know when to enter the house of the old because earlier Jonas's dad said most of them forget their age after a while..?
Since there are birth mothers are there birth Fathers or are the children some hybrid of a creature; half human, half chemical mixture..?
Relation:
Gabriel has a comfort object like most other babies/infant/toddlers in our society to help keep them calm.
Blue eyes are kind of rare. Not as rare as in Jonas's community but to have blue eyes your parent(s) have to carry a recessive gene in them.
**The picture below represents how everyone else is {grey people} compared to Jonas who doesn't necessarily stand out but he is different.**

Colour- The colour red
The first colour Jonas see's
Red is a colour of passion, fear and warning. Maybe there is meaning behind the first colour that Jonas see's. I believe that it was a signal to warn Jonas of something bad coming to the community or that there is something he needs to tend to because he is special and he can only fix it.
Bikes- Bicycles seem to be the only way of transportation. According to WeKnowYourDreams.com a bicycle is a symbol of a moving circle of life. So when they told the story about Caleb and how the former parents got a "new Caleb" it reminded me of this. Or when Roberto died there was a new one born again. It's almost like a never ending circle of life.
White- White is one of the only colours/shades the people in the community see things. White is a symbol of perfection.

Chapter 4 starts with Jonas remarking at how choosing where you get to choose your volunteer hours is a luxury. He also says that you get the freedom of choice when you get your volunteer hours. A character named Benjamin is introduced. He has worked in the Rehabilitation Center for his volunteer hours and Jonas wants to ask about it but is concerned about breaking the bragging rule.
Jonas started to try and look for Ashers bike outside of the Auditorium, Food Distribution Center and around the dwellings behind his. Jonas finally found Ashers bike outside the House of The Old. There was also another bike there; Fiona's bike. Fiona is also an Eleven. Everyone's Volunteer Hours are recorded in the Hall of Records. Jonas heads upstairs to help Asher and Fiona in the bathing room. *Side note; people I don't think can get sickness's and become blind or deaf*. The bathing room had rows and rows of tubs where the Elders where washed. Larissa was the lady Jonas was washing and she started talking about the Release Celebration of Roberto earlier that day. Before you get released from the house of the Old you tell your whole life and people can make toasts and comments. Nobody except the Committee knows where the release room is.

Question:
Are people not allowed to know where the release room is because it is an inhumane or scaring way they release the Elders? Or are the people too soft because they are all safe and protected in their community to handle grief or loss..?
Comparison:
In Chapter 4 they mention how choosing where you would like to spend your volunteer hours is a Luxury. I find this quite odd considering that today's' luxuries are phones, expensive cars, jewelry and houses.

Chapter 5 starts off with the communities morning family ritual. Everyone shares their dreams with their family Units. Jonas had a dream about Fiona in the Bathing room of the Elders. He felt an emotion of wanting; wanting Fiona to get in the tub so he could bathe her. Jonas's mom said that these "wantings" were called stirrings and he had to take pills for them. Jonas took the stirring pills and he says how to feelings were gone by lunch. You take the pills every single day of your "life" starting from when you get the stirrings. For some reason Jonas felt proud to be in the group of people who took stirring pills.
Question:
Why do they want to suppress emotions for people other then your family?
Relations:
In his dream Jonas was confused and many kids in our society feel confused with emotions. In the community they use "stirring medication". In our society people will use things like Anti-depressants, or even medicines like Tylenol or Advil "blur the line between physical and psychological pain".
http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/pain/art5505.html
In this article it describes how in that in just a week or so negative emotions can be suppressed using over-the-counter medications.

Chapter 6 starts with everyone getting ready for the commencement of the ceremonies. While Lily is getting ready and they reveal how when you turn 8 you get your hair ribbons, 9 is a bike and seven is a front facing jacket. The ceremony is starting and everyone in the community is at the Auditorium waiting impatiently. Game was not being released but he was being labeled Uncertain. If a Newborn was released it was considered a failure to the Nurturers. Fiona's family get their second child this years and she was up on stage; he brothers name was Bruno. A couple of years ago a bit named Caleb drowned in the river near the community. A loss of a child was very rare but the parents got a replacement child also named Caleb. The next morning the Nines were given their bikes first thing. The tens were next and Jonas waited as each one got their hair cut to the proper length. Also Jonas ells how when you apply for a spouse it might take years because they want to find the right fit.

Question:
What makes someone not able to fit in, in the community? What is different about them?

Relation:
Gabe was labelled Uncertain because he was progressing as fast as other New Children. In our society, there are children who may not walk at the average time of others or start talking athlete same time as other babies and sometimes parents will help them build leg muscles to support them and help them stand. This is a minor relation but it shows how babies who progress slyer are treated in the two different worlds.

In the beginning of Chapter seven, all of the soon-to-be Twelves sat in order from which they were born, Jonas is 19/50. Jonas describes the boy to his right; number 20 Pierre. He said he was always asking Jonas if what he was doing was allowed such as undoing his tunic on a hot day. At the beginning of the Chief Elder gave a speech
'acknowledging their differences". I think that they have tried so hard to make everyone the same that the differences that they supposedly have are very minor. The first assignments were Fish hatchery Attendant, Supervisor of sixes, Birth mother and, Assistant Director of Recreation. In the speech the Chef Elder gave to Asher, she reminds the community of all of the times he had made grammatical mistakes when he was a Three. She tells how they used a small stick-like whip to chastise them on the legs and hands when errors would occur. Jonas then noticed an Elder he had never seen before, with eyes like his. He was getting more and more calmed down as it reached his turn. Out of everyone's surprise he was skipped. Jonas's mind couldn't stop racing and he tried to think of what he did wrong.

Questions:
Is Pierre working with the elders? I ask this because he was always {apparently} asking Jonas if what he was doing was allowed and so maybe he was a hidden-in-plain-sight kind of spy to make sure Jonas was right for the Job as The Receiver.
How are the Chief Elders elected? Do they run campaigns like a Democracy?

The applause for the last assignment was cheerful but uneasy. The Chief Elder reassures the audience that she did not make a mistake and invites Jonas to the stage. She says that Jonas had not been assigned but selected. The chief Elder tells how they failed in their lest selection and Jonas was confused because he didn't know what he was talking about. The job Jonas was selected for was Receiver and the Receiver can't be monitored on by the one person that can train them. Jonas was shocked because he had never heard of this role. The Chief Elder tells Jonas that they failed in their last selection. The thing that started haunting Jonas was when she said how he has to be alone, and apart. She said how they have been observing him for years and there has been no dreams of uncertainty. The four attributes that the Receiver required were Integrity, Intelligence, Courage and Wisdom. She also mentioned how the training would require physical pain, that no one can apprehend. The final trait needed that no one in the community would apprehend was "The ability to see beyond"Jonas had very deeply thought of telling them right then and there that they had made a mistake and that he was wrongfully chosen. But then it happened again where Jonas saw the crowd change.

Question{s}:
Where does the Old Man that Jonas saw in the crowd of elders live because Jonas said he had never saw him before..?
What happened with the last failed selection and where did the person go..?

Jonas is feeling different from everyone else for once in his life. everyone was congratulating others but avoiding him. Each night after the ceremony you were to memorize the rules for the next day which was training. Jonas was concerned for his training but his mother reminded him that it was a very honourable job and assignment. Jonas was curious about what the last failed selection was but his patents hesitated to tell him. His parents tell him that it was a girl and her name wasn't to be spoken of or used on a new children ever again. The rules for Jonas were:
1)At the end of each school day report to the front entrance of the Annex behind the House of The Old and present yourself to the attendant.
2)Go immediately to your dwelling at the concluding hours of your training.
3)You are exempt from the rules of rudeness and you may ask any question and you will get an answer.
4)Do not discuss training with anyone
5) You are prohibited from dream-telling.
6) You may not take medication for pain regarding training
7) You can't apply for release
8)You may lie.
Most of these rules shocked Jonas.

Relation:
When we get a job, your manager usually establishes some rules regarding the jobs. The same as in the Giver, but in the Giver that are a bit extreme.
Question:
Was the reason why the Receivers are allowed to ask any questions to help with the understanding of Sameness or the memories?

As Fiona left Jonas rode around the building to the Annex and he buzzed in. He noticed that the door was locked and the attendant said it was so that he could have privacy. Jonas described the room as being well-furnished and it had lots of books. he said there was a desk, bed and a sofa and chair. He was mind-boggled at how many books there were. what could they all be there for he thought. Then he saw the old man. Much older looking in person. The Old Man says he has been the Receiver for a long time now. Jonas had a million questions but was afraid to ask. Joans thought at first that he would receiver the old mans childhood memories. he would be receiving the memories of the world. He tells Jonas how there is much more to the world then their community. he asked Jonas if the words, snow, runner, sled and downhill meant anything to him and he didn't understand. he asked Jonas to remove his tunic and lay down on the bed. he He was going to transmit the memory of snow.

Relation:
In our society we transmit memories {more like tell them} by using words and not like in Jonas's case and his communities.
Question:
Are all of the books on the shelves in The givers dwelling memories?

The Giver placed his hands on Jonas's back. He shivered and his hands felt cold at once. Breathed in sharp frigidaire and felt energized. Ho no longer felt the mans hands. he felt cold, tiny and feather like things on his tongue and felt them on his body. he was able to see though his eyes were closed in the Annex, and he saw his breath. he was sitting on a cod hard surface with damp ropes on either side. He suddenly thought of 3 words, sled, hill, snow. he started gliding down the hill and another word came to mind; runners. he came to a stop at the bottom of the hill and he opened his eyes and found himself back in the Annex. Jonas wanted the memory so badly again. he asked why they didn't have snow and the Giver said it was because of climate control because it made it impossible to provide for the community. Hills were slowing transportation a lot and that's why they don't have sleds. The giver then transmitted a memory of Sunshine and Jonas enjoyed it but he was puzzled and where the physical pain would come into affect. So, the Giver gave Jonas the feeling of a sunburn and said it was pain he had never felt.

Question:
is the reason why the receiver ages so much quicker because they are carrying the memories for every single person in the community or because the memories are too stressful?

Jonas remarks that schooled seemed different because of his memories he now had. he rode to training along side Fiona and she was saying how they use a discipline wand for the elderly, same as young children. When Jonas was saying goodbye to Fiona he saw her hair change. When he saw the Giver he told him about every time he had seen beyond. Then the Giver asked Jonas if he had looked at the sled yesterday and he did not. Jonas recalled the memory of sledding and looked down dumbfounded at why the sled wasn't changing back it was just staying like that. The the Giver had Jonas look at the top row of books and he saw then change for an instant again. The Giver told Jonas he was starting t see the colour red. Jonas was puzzled. What was red? Jonas was so confused at why people wanted to change everything, he thought colours were beautiful. He lied back down on the bed and the Giver gave him the memory of a Rainbow.
Question:
What are some reasons they would punish the old? Do they make grammatical errors too?

Weeks went by and Jonas was seeing colour in his everyday life. Jonas started to realize the freedom he didn't have. He was frustrated that he wasn't able to choose which colour tunic he waned to wear. The Giver in a way persuades Jonas into thinking that having colour and even colour is not safe because people could choose the wrong things and it could be dangerous. Jonas laughed at the thought of people choosing where they worked. Jonas was angry that his group mates lived the life of Sameness and he was angry that he couldn't make it exciting for them with colour. he tried giving Asher the colours but it didn't work. The giver gave Jonas a memory were some men were tusking an elephant. Jonas had noticed how the men had different colour flesh, like how the giver told him. He suddenly thought of the word "gun", that's what they had used to kill the elephant. He saw blood; it was red; he had now thought of red differently then she did before. Another elephant had erred out of the trees and roasted. Jonas remembered that sound and he couldn't stop thinking about it. He tried telling Lily that one time elephants were real but she was never going to believe him. Jonas asked the giver the next day if he had a spouse and he said he did but she lived with the rest of the childless adults. He tells Jonas he can apply but living conditions will be different because the books are forbidden from the eyes of regular folk. Jonas asked about the failed receiver in training. He said all of her memories that were given to her when she was training were lost and never to be remembered again. He said to Jonas there was once a time when people had memories. he said it was chaos and they suffered.
Sometime the Giver would send Jonas off because he was in too much pain. A couple days later Jonas asked The Giver what causes him pain. He told Jonas he would transfer what was causing his pain.

Question:
How did memories make people suffer? Are their memories different and when they recall physical pain they can actually feel that pain.

The memory that the Giver was giving Jonas was of the hill but it was steeper and colder. Jonas tried taking control but he couldn't and he was terrified. Jonas was then jarred loose and he was thrown off of the sled. he then felt fire like pain in his legs, he tried to move but then pain grew. He screamed and vomited into the snow. He was then back in the Annex room with tears on his face. From then on training always involved pain. The Giver told Jonas how the Committee was once considering expanding family units to 3 children instead of 2 but the memory that The Giver had of starvation was caused by over-population. -------
Jonas and his family were discussing an up coming release of a new child. A BirthMother was expecting a pair of male twins and they need to release the smaller of the two. Jonas asked if he could have Gave sleep in his room for the night; he was able too. when Game woke up Jonas went over to him and accidently gave him the memory of the sail boat. But it made Gabe fall back asleep.

Relation:
In some parts of the world there is a control over the population. I believe it is for some of the same reasons in the Giver.

Jonas had entered the Annex and saw the Giver in pain. he lied down on the bed so he could help. The Giver gave him the memory of War. There was blood covered ground, people begging for water and horses frantically trotting around. He saw men everywhere. he was in a foul-smelling place where fear was upon him. A boy asked him for water. he wasn't much older then Jonas and blond. His uniform had freshly been stained with blood. Jonas's arm was pained so badly that he couldn't move it and saw his own bone. He reached in his satchel and got the boy some water. In the distance Jonas could hear cannons roaring as he played there for hours until he was faced with death and returned to the Annex.
!6:
Jonas didn't want to burden the memories and he wishes he wasn't chosen . But the Giver reminds him that there are many good memories like the one of a birthday party. Jonas finally felt what being different was. He also learned about animals and what a bond between human and anima was. Jonas asked the Giver what his favourite memory was and he gave it ti Jonas. it was of a Christmas morning.
The giver told Jonas about family and Grandparents. Jonas asked about what the strong emotion in the room was and the Giver said love. Jonas later asked his parents if they loved him. They told him to watch his precision of language; they corrected him; they were proud of him. His parents said it was inappropriate to use the term love.
----------
Later that night he told Gabe about how the world and community could be different. There could be love, colour and even grandparents. The next morning Jonas had decided to throw the pill away. Something in his memories urged him to,
Question:
Did Jonas receive a memory of love for someone other than his family and if so is that what urged him to stop taking the pills?

Today was an unexpected holiday. On holidays everyone is exempted from daily duties. Lily was expressing how she was angry at somebody because they broke the rules of the Playground but Jonas knew she didn't feel actual anger. Jonas left his dwelling and went off on his bike. He saw some kids playing a meaningless and harmless game of what he now knew of was war. He walked into the middle of the field where he himself would often play this Child's game. Once everyone had stopped and started staring at Jonas he begged them to stop playing and he tried explaining what it had meant but Asher didn't have the patience and cut him off. Fiona was also there and had asked Jonas if he wanted to bike alongside the river but he knew those days were over. Later that night Lily explained how her day went. Father had told the family that Gave had taken his first steps the other week. Lily was also so excited to receive her bike next month. Jonas couldn't believe it was almost December again. Father was telling the family that there was a Birthmother expecting twins and how the smaller of the two go to Elsewhere.
Relation
In our world we play what we think are meaning less and playful games as children such as the game of war the children in the community played.
