Year: 2019
Genre: Non-Fiction Picture Book
Ages: 5-8
This book is amazing. Not only is it a fun read, it educates, motivates, and has intriguing pictures. This would be perfect for a Kindergarten/first grade classroom for various reading activities. I could use the "Why Does the Story Matter" strategy to highlight the main ideas of the story. Then, I could either use those ideas as a set of rules for expected classroom behavior such as "Be kind to yourself" or I could use it as reminders so that my students remember that they are worthy and to never give up. This book can help with comprehending mental health, and with coping/conforming with the community around us.

Year: 2019
Genre: Graphic Novel
AWARD: Goodreads Choice 2019
I enjoyed reading this book because it was lighthearted and it allowed me to venture into an unfamiliar culture. This book reminds the reader to always appreciate the good times and to never be bummy or complain that it's over. It also illustrates the power of friendship and trust. This book has many themes that while reading this book, my class could use the "One Text, Multiple Ideas" strategy that allows readers to stop and think. Although it is a chapter book for teens, I can take the themes and pictures from this book and read it to younger audiences.

Year: 1983
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
AWARD: John Newbery Medal
This book is one of my favorites. I read this book in the 2nd grade and loved it. It teaches about situations that some children don't know about yet. It also allows the reader to remember to never give up and overcome any obstacle thrown at you. Using the "Stories that Teach Us About Life Issues" strategy can further this message. Allowing questions and answers from students about their personal lives to connect to this book will be very beneficial. This book is great for individual reading and students can start much needed conversations from the themes this book present.

This book would be really great for a read aloud reading activity such as the "Role Playing Characters to Understand Them Better" strategy in the book. It has rhyming words and beautiful pictures to make the story so much fun. It teaches cultural practices such as climbing Guava trees and cleaning Tilapia fish but it also tells common themes such as the power of family and love. As a class, we could imagine going on the many adventures that the main character did. I can imagine young readers loving to read this book.

Rowland Prize for Fiction For Girls
I like this book because it introduces real emotion and struggles that everyone may feel in their lives. It also shows struggle between family and school that could be useful and familiar to some students. By using the "Express the Emotions" strategy in Seravallo's book could enhance the story being told in the story. I could read this book to my classroom and allow them to hear how the character feels and then allow them to interact as well. This book should definitely be found in upper elementary/middle school book collections.

Although slavery is a touchy subject, it is still essential to know about, especially at younger ages. It opens the discussion and allows for questions from younger audiences. I could use the 1.7 "Act It to Storytell It" Strategy to make reading fun for my kids. Allowing my kids to dance and sing like the pictures in the book help narrate the story and would be helpful when reading this with my future students.

I really would love to introduce this book to my future classrooms and boost their self images using the "Choose Books with Your Identity in Mind" strategy. Choosing a book that represents myself may help other students looking for books that connects to them as well. I love this book because it spreads positivity and the pictures illustrates multiple cultures, colors, and interracial friendship. The book would be perfect for elementary school students because it has limited words and graphics that support the story just as much. The written sound effects could be useful for the 3.1 "Check the picture for help" strategy so students could use the illustrations to help understand the story. Presenting this book in small groups and allowing students to enjoy the adventures of Ace and Bub and also reading the pictures would be the best way to teach this book.
