An advancement to this medication could be taking a tablet that within 3-5 second you are out cold, different tablets could mean different durations of surgery. Maybe instead of having a tube down your windpipe during the surgery part of your brain could still be sending nerves to your lungs so you are still breathing by yourself. Anesthesia may also be used in the future to treat acute infectious illness, mental disorders, and different types of heart conditions. There may be a wide range of new therapeutic applications for anesthesia

(The Future Of Anesthesia - Pain, Surgical, Delivery, and Mosby - JRank Articles) http://science.jrank.org/pages/362/Anesthesia-future-anesthesia.html#ixzz4JfDNrY4d
