  • I had no idea the impact that Stevie Wonder had on getting the death of King recognized and celebrated. Through the protests and song, he did a lot for him. I think it’s really powerful how people from all different genres of life came together to fight for the rights of this one, revolutionary man.

    Despite being an extraordinary student, King first received a C in public speaking. 

    A decade before his assassination, there was an assassination attempt. He was stabbed with a letter opener and was extremely close to death. He decided not to press charges against his attacker, Izola Ware Curry, after finding out she was mentally ill.

    In a trial after King's assassination in 1999, it was unanimously decided by the jury that King's death was a conspiracy organized by federal government agencies and the mafia, King's family received $100 ($167.35 today).

    Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday song (also known as the black people happy birthday song) was a tribute to King.

    Coretta Scott King, King's wife, continued working in social activism. This helped us to see we, too, as "ordinary" people may have the ability to achieve extraordinary.

    We also discovered that many of us, as international students, had not had the opportunity to learn about MLK's history and the Civil Rights Movement in the same way as Domestic peers - this was eye-opening.

    Many of us were struck by MLK's ability to just keep going despite the violence put upon him and the obstacles - including being stabbed - in his way. This took a lot of strength and probably helped to change the minds of some who may have doubted why he was doing what he was doing.

    We also spoke about the meaning of his famous quote, "Darkness cannot drive out Darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

It would be a travesty beyond imagining if we continue to allow inequality to remain throughout the world, for the demands of corporate capitalism to rule the world (and such capitalism demands inequality to survive and turn a profit). I wonder how we, honoring Dr. King's legacy, can move forward and unite for a better future. As long as we strengthen our ethics and recognize our universal shared humanity, we can unite together, break down barriers, and eventually forgive, but not forget, the events of the past. After all, we are all unique, different individuals, but we have the enormous emotional capacity as humans to connect with one another. 

    I am inspired by Dr. King's words in his "I have a dream," speech, especially the unity he spoke of in his dream for the future.
