Prior to and during the cold war there was communistic hatred that spread through the country. People and groups were called out for being a communistic because they made a comment that was slightly socialistic. At its peak musicians artist and even government employees were denied work if they were though to be associated with communism. American citizen feared communism because it was so agents everything they stood for and because of that they wanted to eliminate any traces of it they could find. Communism meant the end of American ways there was money, property, or religion. The end of all those things scared Americans and they didn't like that the other world power with nuclear warheads was a communist country. There were lots of people who unjustly labeled a communist and could do nothing about it. As a whole the country called out its own citizens as being communist working for the Soviet Union, which was often not the case. The reaction to communism affected almost every citizen of the united states. A lot of people were swept up by how popularized it was, but not everyone agreed with it.

The way the United States reacted to overly communism was out of control. Not everyone agreed with the idea of anti communism or how it was being acted out. If one publicly said that they didn't like how things were done then could then also be labeled as a communist or sympathizer. The way people called out their neighbors as a communist just because they didn't like them did more hurt then good. When students at a college tried to argue that robin hood was not communistic they were then called communists them selves. Thought eventually people did change their mind about McCarthy and communism it still hurt the country as a whole.
