ESOL Entry 3 class- Revising Past and Present Tenses

I've been revising verb tenses from previous years for grammar and between teaching other grammar points. For Past simple and continuous, we did a crime scene investigation activity which was very much student-led. The objective was for the students to write a recount of the crime in Past Tense. I created a crime scene in my class by vanishing a letter from my wall display and suggested one of the teachers was the prime suspect as seen on CCtv footage. The students had to form questions in the past tense, then they practiced asking questions. Next they asked the questions which involved note-taking skill and listening for detail. The activity was completed the next day by writing out a recount of the crime and their conclusion from the investigation. This activity gave the students autonomy of learning and they retained the verb tenses through practical application.
