Golden Lines

The Strategy:

Golden lines are an opportunity for each reader to share their learning from the text. It allows readers to collaborate and share their own learning and knowledge.

A golden line can be a line from the text that:

•raises questions for you

•confirms what you already believe

•makes you say aha

•conflicts with your beliefs

•causes you to reconsider prior assumptions

We will use this strategy at the beginning of every book study session moving forward - sometimes we will do breakout rooms like we did this evening, sometimes we will use chat.

So come ready with 2 golden lines from the chapter each week!

This exposé hosted by Emily Hanford is about how educators came to believe in an idea about how children learn to read. This idea was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago, but many still hold fast to the ideas behind it. She examines how these ideas make it harder for many students to learn to read. We will look at our own practices as reflective educators with a growth mindset. There may be difficult conversations, but we will approach them with respect for all, as we move forward with new knowledge for the benefit of all students.
