Fight Song by Rachel Platten

Chapter: 4

Passage:

“ “Now, I told you to stop!” I screamed

“You put down that knife!”

“Leave me alone or I’ll cut you!”

She stood debating. Than she made up her mind and came at me. I lunged at with the knife and she grasped my hand and tried to twist the knife loose. I threw my right leg about her legs and gave her a shove, tripping her; we crashed to the floor. She was stronger than I and I felt my strength ebbing; she was still fighting for my knife and I saw a look on her face that made me feel she was going to use it on me if she got possession of it. I bit her hand and we rolled, kicking, scratching, hitting, fighting as though we were strangers, deadly enemies, fighting for our lives”(122).
Song Name: Fight Song by Rachel Platten

Song Lyrics:

I will scream them loud tonight

Can you hear my voice this time

This is my fight song

Take back my life song

Prove I’m alright song

My power’s turned on

Starting right now I’ll be strong...
Connection: I chose the song Fight Song to connect to the passage that was about how he rebelled and fought with his Aunt Addie. The reason for choosing this song is because this is the first time he fought back against his family. The song is about how they start to fight and how they finally speak out and that connects to this passage in Black Boy because this is the first time Richard has stood up for himself because he was punished for something he didn’t do. He is finally starting to stand up for himself and that is what the song is about, fighting and standing up for yourself.
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8qDOGLCSFo
