The story of my name begins here: My parents were expecting to be having a baby boy, until February 11, 1994 came around and a baby girl made her grand entrance in to world. She entered the world with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. She was just fine, and her name quickly changed from Bryson the boy to Kelsey for a little girl. My parents were completely shocked because based on my heart rate and other pregnancy symptoms my mom they thought I was a boy. My name is Kelsey Michelle Winkler, and my mom gave me my name. Several months before I was born she was reading an article in Readers Digest about an NFL player who had a daughter named Kelsey; I suppose the name stuck with her. My middle name is Michelle, and my parents agreed upon this name because it is also my mom’s middle name. Naturally my nickname is Kels, but some close to me also call me Keck. When I was little I called myself Kecky. Kelsey originated as an Irish name. It means ‘island of the ships’. The name Kelsey is also a unisex name, that means ‘Brave’. As for my last name, the meaning of Winkler can be defined as a dweller on a corner of land; one who kept a corner shop, especially one that dealt in second-hand items. My last name comes from my Pop, my dads dad. He was born and raised in Hungary but his father came from Sweden. My family identifies our last name as a Swedish name. Winkler is an unusual, one of a kind name, which has given me a lot of attention over the years. Many nicknames I have received because of my last name include, Wink, Winky, and the least favorite Winky Tinky.

If I hear someone talking in Ebonics I assume they are less educated, If I hear someone talking really southern I assume they are "redneck", and If I hear someone talking very "proper" I assume they have a lot of money and are snobby. This picture represents a group of diverse students that all speak English in different ways/dialects. These children taught me not to "judge a book by its cover" by not stereotyping they way people talk.

My strength when teaching culturally diverse students is that I try my best to learn key words from their language to communicate, and I even buy books to bring to school to help better communicate with these culturally diverse students. The students also recognize the efforts I put forth because the students who speak the least amount of English always love me the most. This image represent two silly second grade students who don't speak very good English but always insisted to work in groups with me or do their independent work near me. Despite the language barrier, I'm good at attaining student-teacher relationships with NEP and ELL students.
