The Earth's surface was weathered away over millions (maybe billions) of years. The earth was weathered by wind, water, ice and gravity. All this weathered material was then eroded. This material was carried away by wind or water. Plate tectonics, when they shifted that caused weathering because it broke the Earths surface apart. Earthquakes, let out a big force and it shakes the ground, causing buildings and structures to fall and weather the ground. Volcanoes, they can weather with their lava, they can also erode by carrying material away with the force of the eruption.
