Nicole Kearney:Going to a new place can be nerve wrecking but, when people tell you “it will be fun, the memories will last forever.” I remember the day I was on my way to Cadet Leadership Camp(CLC) a.k.a. boot camp. I have always been expected to join the JROTC program in my high school since I was a sibling of the previous Commander of the program. Being the second student to go to the same school only four years later I was held at the same standards as her.

Sometimes it takes a traumatic experience to come to certain senses. I always seem to catch myself not living my life to the fullest. Often I waste so much time being upset about situations that don't even matter. I never really realized the value of life until recently my house had a furnace fire. My life never really felt that threatened until that day. My eyes were opened to the fact that I have no time to waste, and that my life can be taken away from me at anytime.

Anthony Parada Professor HilberthEN111-0117 February 2017Narrative Assignment: Conquering FearIntroduction:Conquering your own fears takes a long time to do but it is possible. I was afraid of roller coasters, I always imagined a terrible accident was going to happen and the fear of being hundreds of feet in the air always popped into my head. I was always the guy that carried everybody’s stuff when they went on Superman and I was tired of it. I knew that I had to overcome the fear so that I can enjoy being with my friends. Without realizing it overcoming my fear I became a more adventurous person.

Love is in the hair

What do you want to be when you grow up? That was the question we were all asked when we were in elementary school and sometimes even now. The typical response would be an astronaut, fireman, doctor, or a police officer but since I was little my dream was to become a hairstylist. Being an only child I had to entertain myself one way or another; Bratz were my favorite toys to play because of their looks and luscious blonde hair that always fascinated me. One of my favorite memories was going to the hair salon with my mother and hearing the sound of multiple blow dryers, the scent of coconut hair products and the smell of burnt hair in the air. In those moments, I knew that my dream as a hairstylist was not going to fade away.

When growing in one of the poorest places in New Jersey, such as Newark, they’re multiple labels that are placed on you before you can speak. Coming from a city like Newark, they are not many people who go to college and graduate because of these labels. College was not an option for many people in my city, because when it was brought up there was only negative things said about it; the cost of attending, unable to know the concepts and not being able to graduate would the comments people who throw throughout the city. If you didn’t go to college then you were apart of the statistics; getting incarcerated or dead. For me, this wasn’t going to be my destiny, I would allow myself to become another statistics. When being apart of a poor community that’s always in the bottom of the barrel, it’s a tough transition to fight the stereotypes and becoming a college graduate for my family.

To be financially set and to have moveabilty in building a strong foundation in the future for one self is a hard task. Being that is difficult does not mean it is impossible. A person must understand what is the true value of a dollar and how low minium wage is now a days. Hardwork and dedication on the job are key factors into making life so much easier for us due to the fact that everything involves money. Money may not be important to others or define happiness but its how you survive in this world.

In a matter of a few months, life can change for the better or worst. I remember graduating high school like it was yesterday. When my high school principal said, "Congrautulations to the class of 2016", I almost cried in tears. I am not sure if it was tears of joy or relief. Sering every one of my classmates hugging each other tightly and embracing each other with love was impeccable. It was like we were family despite all the drama. Some people I will miss and others I will not, but I wish them all the best. All of friends have exciting careers to look forward too. Meanwhile, I am still struggling about what I want to do after college. I always feel left behind and everyone else is moving forward. During my first semester in college, I began to realize that my transition into Caldwell University is more than dealing with schoolwork
