My thoughts and opinions on the Courts ruling to allow Tony Bland to die through the withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment including food and water is that it is unethical in my opinion. Even though someone who is in a coma or a vegetative state is unconscious and will not respond to voices, other sounds, or any sort of activity going on nearby, the person is still alive nonetheless. With this justification that Tony Bland is still alive, I think that it is wrong to conduct euthanasia because of this sole reason. Despite the parents having the autonomy to decide on this course of action, it is best to leave him to die of natural causes even if there is an intention to remove any of the patient's pain or suffering that may be experienced in the process of natural death.

I feel that as long as the decision made is for the best interest of the patient and that no positive change is reasonably foreseeable, withdrawing life-prolonging treatment is as ethical as withholding it. It is also not ethically wrong to let someone die of natural causes, and if unnatural treatment does not do any better significance to someone's life other than just existence, it is best to let nature take its course.

Tony might still want to live despite being in a vegetative state. I feel that they should have consider the best interest for Tony & end his life as quickly as possible instead of prolonging it.

His family had also wished for the withdrawal. Withdrawing would also allow Tony to go through less pain which is more ethical.

I feel that in Tony Bland case, the chances of survival and recovery of life is extremely low , we can see foresee that Tony will not be able to have positive quality of life and it will be extremely costly for his family to continue the treatment. He will need a full time caregiver to assist him with his activity of daily living. His condition may cause further distress to both the family financial situation and mental health. His parents may face burnt out and stress as a result of caring for him .Hence, I agree with the courts ruling to allow him to die through the withdrawal of life prolonging treatment including food and water.

In my personal opinion, I think that it was a good decision taken to allow Tony Bland to die through the withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment. The reason being, it will be in his best interests to be allowed to die so as to end his sufferings at once. Furthermore, since Tony was in a vegetable state, this is an unavoidable situation whereby it is justifiable for Tony's parents to make a decision for him as he is unable to communicate - incompetent. There are instances in which keeping one alive can be more painful than ending his/her life. Thus, I agree with the courts ruling.

My thoughts and opinions is that if all signs of consciousness is gone as can be seen by multiple tests and whatever the doctors can do to determine if he still has consciousness or not, and concluding he is in a vegetable state, it will be alright and in the best interest to allow the cease of giving life-prolonging treatment, for he has no chance to waking up and function again. It will lower the burden and grief period of those who love and support him.

The parents might also face stress from caring for Tony and it can get uite expensive as well. Therefore, i understand the decision even though it does not sit right with me

In my opinion, what they did to Tony was not fair. This is because he is only 21 years old, he is still considered young. Despite his serious brain injury, there is still a possibility that he may live, though the odds are slim. Even if he is in a persistent vegetative state, he may still wish to live. It is an assumption on the part of the parents that he would not wish to be kept alive. I believe they should continue treatments for a while and then choose the withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment if nothing else can be done and no changes can be made.

However, if the doctor claims that it hard to save Tony due to his state, then opting for the withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment is ethical. Although it might not be what Tony wants, it is the only option that is left other than watching Tony suffer.

However, if he is unable to make any decision for himself, before the court rules out the decision to allow Tony Bland to die through the withdrawal of life-prolonging treatment, the doctors will have to ensure that all the possible treatments have been given to him. This is because even though he is in a vegetative state, there is still a chance for him to recover.

I feel that it is reasonable for the Courts to allow Tony to pass on by withdrawing the life-prolonging treatment because his parents are the ones who think that it will be in the best interest of his son for him to pass on, considering the fact that they believe he will not want to continue living if he was still mentally competent.

However, there is the dilemma on whether Tony will actually go with the decision of his parents if he was still mentally competent. Such decisions made by his parents cannot simplistically be taken as conclusive of the patient’s present preferences as opposed to what was in his mind when he was still mentally competent. This is because his existential preferences at the point of treatment might be greatly different from when he was still mentally competent.
