Not much is known about him as a boy, but he grew up under Thomas Tallis as a protégé.

About 9 years later, he returned to London to become organist in the Chapel Royal or St. James's Palace, where he was organist along with Tallis.

He got the whole patent to himself by 1587 due to the death of Tallis, and then dominated the printing of English Music for the next 9 years, until the patent expired.
