The monster tells Conor about what Conor can expect to happen to him in the coming nights, and that he can expect a visit from the monster, almost every night, and each night the monster will tell him a story, and the Monster has three stories. The importance of this chapter, is the fact that this is first time Conor and the Monster have ever really spoken, or confronted each other. It tells us what we can expect the Monster to do, and what will be happening for the next few chapters. It keeps the reader reading, by creating suspense, such as “ It couldn’t mean – “, “There’s no way it could mean –“, not actually telling the reader about his nightmare. Is the monster there to help guide Conor the right or the wrong way? During the argument Conor glances out the window to see The Monster staring at him. Conors grandma finally tells Conor that he is going to come live with her which makes Conor bewildered.
Conors mom who was already in horrible conditions is now also stressed from the conflict between Conor and his grandma.
This chapter is important because it gives readers a idea of where the next setting  of the story is going to be and also how bad of a condition he mom is going through.

This quote shows that Conor does not know his mother is only getting worse and that the illness she has cannot be cured. It shows that he does not know that his mother is slowly dying.

He brings Conor back 150 years ago to a place where factories grew the landscape like weeds and where trees fell and where up ended rivers blackened. The Monster tells a story about a bitter chemist who had always been an unpleasant man. The people also thought of him as bitter and treated him the same way he treated them. One day a young father of two daughters asked the chemist for a special medicine from the yew tree. The chemist being the bitter man he was disproved and sent the man away. That very night the daughters died and the monster came walking.
This chapter is quite important in relation to the text since it features the yew tree which is an important symbol throughout the text. In Europe, yew trees are commonly put into cemeteries. It has always been a thought in the book and in real life that the yew tree is a healing tree due to many medicines that have been made out of the tree. The yew tree is associated with life and death and the monster is there to help Conor live through the death of his mother. Conor hopes that the monster is here to help heal his mother, but it is really here to heal Conor and to help him get through the things he has been facing.
"The yew tree is the most important of healing trees, it said. It lives for thousands of years. It can cure almost any ailment man suffers from, mixed and treated by the apothecary."
This quote is quite important because it helps give the reader some extra background information so the symbolism of the yew tree makes more sense.

In the previous chapter Conor has destroyed his Grandmothers house by breaking furniture and pictures. This chapter reflects his actions regarding what he did to his grandmothers house and, not being able to go the hospital because his mother was in a critical condition. Conor feels invisible because he doesn't get punished for it and his Dad also mentions "It means we're going to pretend like it never happened." This also reflects being invisible because Conor is not being worried about at the moment so this 'normal' behavior form his Dad and Grandma is affecting his mental health. The themes represented in this theme are grief, sorrow and isolation.  Another quote that reflects Conor's behavior is "Just do it." Conor wants the bully's to punch him. This quote shows that Conor has had enough with what's going around him and doesn't want to look at the reality of his mother. Plus the bullying might be a way to get his mind off his mother.

This theme is furthermore shown by saying that Conor "hardly dared to think it". Throughout the chapter, Conor is constantly thinking about people giving him "talks" as if they weren't for his own good but as something to drag him down.

For example, in the text it says, "He realized that someone was talking to him. Lily was across the aisle, where she'd sat throughout the years they'd been in school together. She kept looking up at Mrs Marl, but he fingers were slyly holding out a note.
A note for Conor.
"Take it," she whispered out of the side of her mouth, gesturing with the note."
After this happens we don't really hear much of Lily once Conor visits his mom. So is Lily and Conor friends again?

Conor facing his nightmare, but the nightmare keeps going after the nightmare usually ends. Conor lets his mother fall, and tells the monster his truth; why he let his mother go, why he is ready for her to die. By Conor telling the monster the truth about his nightmare, would it help him to be able to let his mom go in real life? And would it help him be able to tell his mom about the nightmare?
