The ghettos represent the hatred for Jewish people as the Germans did not want them to be seen, find out what is about to happen, or even talk to other people who were not Jewish.

"In fact, we felt this was not a bad thing: we were entirely among ourselves." This quote stood out to me because being optimistic and looking at the barbed wires, the ghettos, and the officers as protection kept the Jewish people spirits alive while they had no idea what was going to happen in the near future.

"Her husband and two older sons had been deported with the first transport by mistake. The separation had totally shattered her." This quote gives a different perspective than the main character because it shows how much being separated from family can easily break positive spirits. Being together helps everyone involved but being separated takes a toll on people.

As Mrs. Schachter screamed that there was a fire and her child cling to her skirt trying to calm her down makes me think how tragic the experience must have been for all the people in that time. I never really put it in perspective that their were children being murdered as well as babies. I always think of the killings being of adults. I never once thought about the children being separated from their parents and being forced to be strong as they have no idea what is going on. Even seeing their mother, father, and siblings break down must have been some of the hardest parts of being transported.

As Mrs. Schachter was crying and screaming about a fire that she was imaging, it paints a picture of how the poor women was being treated. She was hallucinating because she did not have the basic needs to keep her mind in the right place. She was struggling so much and it only got worse from that point. In my mind it created a picture of a child trying to calm his mother down as he sees her struggling for reasons that I can't even begin to understand. No human should have to go through that type of deprivation.

Knowing that you have already made it through what is known as the worst danger keeps their faith alive as there will hopefully be an end to all of this torture. This quote stood out to me because keeping hope, sanity, and faith is what is going to keep them alive. During selection they cannot look weak or they will eventually be killed.

As they were eating that night Elie explained the soup tasting like corpses. I can't imagine looking at a lifeless body hanging there for everyone to see. The crematoria must have gotten to full for that time so they put the corpses in the soup instead. I believe that the Germans wanted the Jews to suffer as much as they possibly could so they did whatever was humanly possible to make their lives miserable.

They believe that he should be there with them keeping them safe instead of letting mass killings happen to innocent people. The possible theme is that keeping positive and keeping faith can keep your spirits up which can help in the long run.

As the bombing was happening they were not afraid of dying they were happy that some parts of the camp was being blown away. They did not want the bombing to end. I think this is important to remember because they are being treated so awful and look death in the eyes left and right they are no longer afraid of death. They would rather die with the bomb then keep going not knowing what else is going to happen to them.

As more people were slowly dying from starvation and their bodies being extremely exhausted they were being disposed. One death that really put in perspective how much staring death in the eyes can change a person is when the father and son both got jumped and died. While the father was trying to quickly eat some bread he got jumped by his own son. His own blood had betrayed him over a little ration of bread. As soon as the son got the bread from his dead father he got jumped and died. Elie was only 16 at the time. It puts it into perspective how much starvation and being deprived from basic needs can change a person into not even mourning over your own fathers death that happened right in front of you.

Knowing that his father had passed and been traded out with another person that quickly makes me sick. It is unbelievable how they were being treated. I really cannot understand that this was part of history and that the Jews were able to put up with this type of treatment. The Jews did the best they could have done trying to stay optimistic but I can't believe how the Germans could do such horrible things. I cannot believe that this is part of history that will always be talked about.

Elie was still a child when his father passed. He had been through some of the worst concentration camps with his father by his side through all of it. As soon as his father had died he had to make a decision in his own mind to keep going or to give up. He had a lot of conflict in his own mind about how he will keep his motivation, faith, and hope even with the loss of his father. He had a lot of self conflict after his fathers death.

"With only one desire to eat. I no longer thought of my father, or my mother." This quote shows a possible theme that having a support system is one of the most important things in a persons life. If you do not have support behind you, you get no where in life. Being alone can crush your mentally. Being alone in your head and being alone outside of your head is terrible. It will eat you from the inside out. Having people with you is the only way that you can survive.

Elie was finally free but in a hospital because he was sick. He had made it through all of the horrific things that had happened to him yet soon after he was freed he had gotten sick. Being free was the best thing that had happened to Elie but when he looked at himself he didn't see him, he saw a corpse. He himself had left a long time ago. Seeing death, hangings, beatings, whippings, and burning changed Elie as it would change anyone.

Elie described himself as a corpse instead of a human. He saw himself as nothing more than a corpse. Basically skin and bones. He had not seen himself since the beginning of his journey and had lost himself completely. All that Elie had gone through he stayed strong through it all and made it out alive unlike so many other Jews that went through that same journey.
