When Esperanza told "Miguel you are not standing on the other side of the river" that means that they use to be rich in Mexico and now they are poor in America. Also I think that this means that Miguel has not improved since they left Mexico and she still feels like the second class citizen. In paragraph 44 it says "Are you standing on the right side of the river". Also in paragraph 42 it says I don't want to hear your optimism about this land of possibility when I see no proof". This means Esperanza does not want to hear about his hopes and he will work hard to get to the other side of the river when she does not see any sign.

In the story I read asparagus Esperanza is mad at Miguel . In the story it says Esperanza throws the dough at the wall and slams the door shut because she is mad I read this in paragraph 22 . I think think this is why Esperanza is she is mad because Miguel id getting a job in america and Esperanza says america is too unfair for a job.
