Appearance and Size

• Size: Measures only 4 to 10 millimeters long (about the size of a grain of rice).

2. Mechanics of Feeding

• Sap-Sucking Style: Leaf sheep are "sap-sucking" mollusks. They do not bite off chunks of seaweed. Instead, they use a specialized, blade like row of teeth called a radula to cleanly puncture individual algal cell walls.

• Selective Digestion: Once a cell is pierced, the leaf sheep sucks out the internal fluids (cytoplasm). It processes and digests the sugars and general cell material for immediate energy but purposefully leaves the algae's tiny solar panels the chloroplasts completely intact

Foraging Ecology and Social Patterns

• Herd Grazing: Despite being less than half an inch long, leaf sheep often aggregate on the same patch of Avrainvillea seaweed. They graze together in small clusters, helping to naturally regulate local algae growth around shallow coral reefs.
