The Mourning Woman - Diamond Moore

My group: Joanna, Justin, Blake, and Juan had the privilege of engaging with a fellow sister in Christ who was enduring hardship over her husband. She shared with us first after we explained the Gospel, that she already believed in Jesus and had accepted Him into her heart. Upon the first few minutes of discourse with her, Juan reported to us that he didn’t know, but he believed her to be a Christian, and this observation came to be true. After realizing her faith in Jesus, we asked for any prayer requests she had. With that question began a period of several minutes where she was pouring her heart out to us in her spoken language, which no one but Juan could understand. Finally, Juan turned to us and shared what she had said: She wanted prayer for her husband, as he had been accused of murdering his brother, and after an armed facedown with a man at the local store one night, God spared his life, and shortly after, he fled illegally to Miami by boat. She shared that he had been unsuccessful in finding a job, and that he had been there for 5 months. She reported lastly, that his life was in danger so he could not return, and although they keep in touch, she did not know when she would see him again. After hearing this, Juan prayed for the mourning woman, and all of the group shared hugs and tears with her.

Jeni accepted Christ with a witch next to her. I shared the gospel with her and she said she wasn’t sure she could accept because she had sinned too much. We shared various verses from Romans with her, including 3:23, 6:23, and 8:1, and she said “I needed to hear that” and decided to accept Jesus. (All the while the witch was yelling into her phone and making a bit of a scene when we prayed) So it was chaotic, but God moved in the midst.

The first “house” we (Abby, Janelle, George, Josh, Marvin, and Gabriel) went to was a storefront owned by a dad with his three kids (2 young girls and an older boy). We first talked to the Dad while Janelle was entertaining the kids, and we learned that the dad is already a Christian. He was reading his Bible before we walked in and he shared that his favorite verses is Psalm 91. As we presented the filter and Gospel to him, his kids were still off playing with Janelle, but afterwards, they took interest in the filter so we demonstrated to them how it works. They were really amazed (“magia!”) and while we had their attention, we shared the Gospel with them as well. They weren’t paying too much attention so we were feeling a bit discouraged, until we asked if any of them wanted to accept the Gospel. The boy (who we learned is 10 and is named Carlos) actually accepted and prayed the sinner’s prayer with us. This was an incredibly encouraging experience which pushed us to be more bold with the next house we went to.

Although she’d attended church, I think she hadn’t had the gospel explained to her fully and clearly. Marcelo Sr. stepped in after our gospel presentation to make sure she understood the gospel clearly, and she accepted Christ!

Luis was the first house we visited on this trip. He was a very kind old man who offered us food, showed us his mango tree and chickens. He lived with his 2 daughters. He was very attentive during the gospel presentation, and by the end of the it, his eyes were tearing up. He shared how he used to go to church, but that he had been possessed by a demon and led astray. He thought that he would still go to heaven because he was a nice person, so he was really moved by the illustration of pouring clean water to the dirty cup, the water was still dirty. At the end of the presentation, we asked him whether he wanted to accept Christ back into his life, and he said yes! God had been preparing his heart way before we had arrived, PTL!

The young girl here Pamela accepted Christ! She is going to be a university student soon, wants to be a P.E./volleyball teacher. Her grandma (Polina) pictured here is already a Christian and goes to church. Pamela occasionally go to church with grandma and helps out with the music team here. When we first share the gospel and ask her where does she stand with God, or if she has accepted Christ, she said "I don't know". We told her that she can make the decision today if she wants to. We ask her what is holding her back, she said " I don't know again". We asked her how confident she is to enter heaven with where she is now, she said she does not know, and we told her that she can start her relationship with Jesus today in her heart because God wants to reunite with her, and her grandma would love to be with her in heaven eternally as well. Then she decided to put her faith in Jesus and prayed the sinner's prayer. We confirmed that if everything in sinners' prayer is something she wants to believe in, she said yes. Before we leave, we encourage she continue to learn more about Jesus when she goes to university

On Wednesday morning, we -- Jing, Kierra, Yonathan, George, Ramón (spanish translator, in picture), Yonathan (15-yr-old boy from the local church), Micaela & Steven (creole translator) -- approached a house of a woman with two kids, but she said they did not have a bucket for the filter. We moved on to the neighbors house, a elderly couple named Alfredo & Cilicia, aged 71 and 69 respectively. As we told them we needed a bucket to build the filter, Cilicia called out in Spanish "Neighbor, bring me a bucket!" The neighbor ended up coming over through a shared backyard, and we were able to use a smaller plastic bin to build the filter. After completing the filter, Cilicia was amazed by how clean the water was. She eagerly grabbed the water filter and cup, assertively exclaiming "¡DA ME!" or "Give it to me!" so that she could experience using the filter herself. Jing persisted in sharing the Gospel despite a challenging situation of dual translation where Micaela translated to Cilicia in Creole and Ramón to Alfredo in Spanish, while the Neighbor was off to the side but listening in. Ultimately, the word of God was not bound by the chaos as all three of them prayed to accept Christ! Truly God is mighty to save and we all felt really thankful for how God worked in these two families :)

--George

This was the second house our group visited, and he was an older man who lived with his partner and daughter. When George was installing the filter, I tried to break the silence by asking the man about the cross he had displayed on his door frame and a painting he had of Jesus with some sheep. He said he was a Christian, but he seemed focused on his works as a basis for his salvation. After we shared the filter (he was very amazed) and the Gospel, we asked if he accepted and believed what we were saying and he said “I think everything you are saying is good but I can only be 80% confident.” We explained how as he builds his relationship with Christ, he will only become more confident and then we prayed with him.

We shared about the filter with them and the Gospel, and while the DIL was more preoccupied with her kids, the grandmother explained how she recently lost her son in an electrical accident. When we asked if she wanted to accept the Gospel, she kept saying “not right now” without any reason. Pastor Jose came by to help us out and he explained to her the torture that Jesus went through, and how God know her pain and loves her, which is why He wants her back into His family. She started breaking down into tears and accepted with the sinner’s prayer.

On Wednesday afternoon, we visited a home that had 4 cousins - Bryan (27), George (20s), Edward (20), Daniel (~10). Edward was born in the DR but moved to Pennsylvania in 2016, and is currently visiting his family for some time. After we installed the filter for this family, we shared the Gospel to all four cousins. When we asked if they understood and had any questions, Edward said that he wanted to accept Christ, and while we were talking with him, Daniel talked to another one of our translators, Biviana, to accept Christ too. When I asked Edward why he wanted to accept Christ, he said his mom is a Christian and taught him things from the Bible from a young age, but he never made a decision until that moment. It turns out that Bryan and George are already Christian, and I gave them my last copies of the Gospel handouts. Bryan looked at the handout and said that he thought it was instructions for the water filter, but Linda clarified that the handout was “instructions to God.” Thankful that we met this family and witnessed these salvation decisions!

We presented the gospel and she had some questions regarding how to be a Christan and was worried that she needs to denouce her family and leave her boyfriend. She said that her mom is Catholic and do not want her to trust in Jesus. We affirm her that Jesus wants to have a relationship with her and all she needs to do is to accept this free gift of salvation. as others cannot make a decision for her. He asked: “When you come before God, what will you say when he asks you, what did you say about my Son Jesus, that b/c your husband as alcoholic, you choase not to receive him? Each person must respond to Jesus as an individual. How will you respond to Jesus - do you want to receive him as your Lord and savior?” And at the end of some back-and-forth, and struggle, finally she received… we could see her joy, see her burden lifted.

When we first saw them, we felt a bit intimidated because they were all tough looking guys, covered in tattoos and talking loudly with one another. They didn’t seem like the type of group that would be open to hearing the Gospel. If it wasn’t for yuney being there, we might have passed them by. But as it turned out, they were not only open to receiving the filter, but hearing the gospel as well. After Kelsey shared the Gospel with them and asked them if they wanted to receive Christ, they seemed dismissive at first. But then Yuney stepped in. He told the guys that it was important that they respond today because they could die at any moment. And then he challenged them directly, telling them, “if you’ve ever lied, or stolen, or committed fornication, you’re not going to heaven - don’t you know?” As he spoke to them, I could see that the guys’ expressions rapidly changed from one of flippant bemusement to one of sober introspection. They were taking him seriously and feeling convicted, and acknowledging the truth of what he was saying with nods and murmurs of agreement. Then he asked them again if they would like to receive Christ. And one guy said yes! That was amazing enough, But Yuney wasn’t content with one. One-by-one he asked each of the guys if they would like to receive Christ, pointing at each one of them and saying, “how about you?” To our surprise, each of the 5 guys said yes. When he got to the last guy, who was sort of hiding off to the side in the back, something funny happened. The last guy didn’t seem interested at first, but with all of his friends and us looking at him, he shrugged and grinned sheepishly and said something in Dominican that seemed to say, “well how can I say no now?” And he too received Christ! Afterwards there were cheers and hugs all around. We snapped a photo with the guys - Yuney stretching his ponderous wingspan out to take a perfect selfie - and then hung out with the guys for a bit. They yelled down the lot for their friends to come over to take a photo with the gringo (Kelsey.) and one of the guys particularly singled out me and ceci because he wanted a photo with the coreanos so he could put it on his social media. When we debriefed afterwards, Yuney was beaming and exclaimed, “5 salvations!! Amazing.” Indeed - praise the lord!

(Noah)

Yuney led us to the outskirts of the town where we met David and his mom. We found out that he was a Christian who went to the local church. He was holding a baby, who was his sister’s daughter. His other sister was in the hospital, so he asked for prayers for her. We still decided to share the gospel through the filter illustration, during which his first sister joined. We realized that she had actually been there the day before when we had shared the gospel w the motorcycle gang. After the presentation, we asked her if she had ever accepted Christ before, and she said no. We then asked her if she wanted to make this decision today, and she said yes w no questions asked. It seemed like God provision and plan that we would meet her again, since we hadnt had the chance the ask her the previous day. We prayed for her, and we could see so much joy in her brother’s eyes. He laughingly told her that she would have to come to church w him now. Praise God for how he led us to this girl again and how he has been chasing her down through her family!

She, like many others, believed that God was in her heart because she was a good person and did good things, but we as a group pulled verses from John 1, Mark 2, and Galatians 2 to explain that we need Jesus in our hearts to have true access to God’s love. After reading these verses, something seemed to click in her mind, and it showed in her smile, and she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

Damaris is a wife and mother of four children who rededicated her life to Christ. She previously went to church and was passionate about the Gospel, but she found judgment from her fellow church members for how she dressed. Damaris was uncomfortable with the dress codes that her church enforced upon her, and when not in church, she would be belittled by the community. She clearly knew of Jesus’ sacrifice, but she could not separate it from the church’s treatment of her. Because of this, she stopped going. We (Ceci, Noah, Natalia, Blake, and Yuney) emphasized Jesus’ welcoming and nonjudgmental nature, and discussed the idea that the Gospel her former church was preaching was not the Gospel of Jesus. We explained that some church leaders tend to pervert the Gospel in a way that makes their community not a true representative of who Jesus was. In the end, Damaris understood this and decided to come back to God. This experience opened our eyes to the responsibility the body of Christ has in recreating Jesus’ nature and bringing others to Him. Our actions have the power to either attract or repel people from God. - Natalia

The Old Woman and Her Father - Tres

This past Tuesday was a very important day for me and my group (Group 2: Sierra, Megan, Sed, and I). Through the power of the Holy Spirit we were able to work together and make a strong team. After a devastatingly close meeting with a woman, her husband, and her mother-in-law, we were unable to allow the previous house to make a decision to bring Jesus into their hearts. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed and spiritually exhausted. Nevertheless, before we left, my team and I decided to go out and give another filter to another family.

After walking a little bit, my group found this 40 year old woman and her father in their yard. Our translator (Jackie) and the student missionaries (Benedido and Silvia) asked them to come in and give a free water filter. They said yes, and my team and I went in.

After setting up the filter, it was my time to share the Gospel. I had prayed about if this morning and I somewhat had a plan of attack by using Romans 3:23-24 to express how we’re all sinners, but good news is that Jesus also forgave us. I said simply that the Gospel can be summarized in John 3:16 and that we only have to trust that Jesus dying on the cross allows us to be clean. We just have to invite Jesus into our hearts and confess that Jesus is Lord, we will be saved (Romans 10:9).

After a strong intro, I blundered the ending. I jumbled a lot of words to describe how we need to connect with Jesus. Nevertheless, after explaining the Gospel, the woman said other missionaries have come into the area and shared the Gospel, but this time they are ready. After hearing this, I was kind of stunned. This was the first time I had explained the Gospel and someone came to Christ. Moreover, not just one person, but two people accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

This was an amazing experience and God truly proved to my discouraged heart that He is the God of wonders who makes things happen when you obey. I was really blessed by this experience and I am still amazed to have been a part of this experience.

Caesar was a middle age guy who lived on more of the outskirts of town. Coconut Tree called out to him to ask if he'd like to receive the filter from us and he welcomed us over. He was a pretty nice guy and shared that he often passed out fruit from his trees to all the neighbors. When we asked him our intro question regarding if he'd go to Heaven or Hell he said that he was unsure. While he admitted to being sinful and dirty like the water he said he'd tried to follow God. It seemed that he didnt consider himself too bad. When Coconut Tree probed him more as to why he did not want to accept the gospel after we had presented it knowing that he was a sinner, the man revealed that he struggled with drugs. Coconut Tree shared with him Matthew 11:28 along with several other scriptures inviting Ceasar to share these burdens with Jesus and be forgiven. This seemed to really reasonate with him and he said yes to receiving the gospel!

My group: Justin Yu, Linda, Janelle, Samuel, Naomi and Casandra

On the last day of filter distributions, my group walked to our first house, and we were greeted by two families (7 people

Total) . The entire week up to this point, I personally had not witnessed any salvation decisions, but before heading out to the harvest field on this particular day, I had prayed that my heart would be opened. I noticed after praying that my outlook on the situation changed. I no longer was discouraged, but instead eager. The entire time at the home with the families, I prayed that Gods will would be done, and that He would give me the words to say when I began the Gospel presentation. The time for the gospel presentation came, and I stood up, in complete confidence that Gods will would be done. After I finished, and I extended the invitation to accept the gift that is Jesus Christ, 5 out of the 7 people that heard immediately wanted to let Jesus into their hearts. However, a man of the age 19, was unsure still. While Samuel, Casandra, and Naomi addressed the other 5 people’s questions, Linda continually showed the young man Bible verses to assure him in his doubts. The word of God is NOT bound, and this was proved in this situation, because when I asked once more, he said he was ready to let God into his heart. All 6 people (3 adults and 3 of age children) gave their lives to Christ, and the 1 child that was not old enough to make the decision himself, did not personally proclaim. None the less, God proved to me and I’m sure my whole group through these people, that when we rely on our own power, we are capable of little to nothing; but in relying on him, nothing is impossible.

Eloida is a housewife and a Sunday school teacher for about 50 kids. Her understanding of the gospel seemed pretty clear, and she nodded throughout the gospel presentation. We (Josh, George, Janelle, Abby) asked if her kids would want to hear the gospel, and she gathered them in front of their house. She had a 22-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old son, and a 13-year-old daughter. There was also a 13-year-old girl who was a friend’s daughter. The 22-year-old daughter left in the middle of the presentation to pick up a child from school. After the gospel presentation, Marvin told the kids to imagine being at the gates of heaven, with Jesus asking why they should be let in. He emphasized that Eloisa’s faith wouldn’t save them, that they had to make a personal decision. Marvin prayed the sinner’s prayer out loud. Then, he asked if the kids had prayed in their hearts, and the boy said yes! Later, Marvin said that one of the girls also accepted Christ!

I don’t think I prayed so much for people to make salvation decisions as I did Wednesday. In the last distribution time of our trip, I really prayed for God to move the people’s hearts that we spoke to. After ending a conversation a catholic man, we had 40 minutes left to make the time count. We came across a woman sitting beside the street. Though she didn’t have a bucket, she was happy to hear the gospel. Our translator Celina led the charge, and as she spoke, an older man and two young girls (the woman’s neighbors) also came up to listen. Celina shared the story of the Samaritan woman from John 4, trying to identify different elements of the story with the woman we were speaking with. During the conversation, one of the young girls, a 10yr old name Yarelis, came back and forth showing me the children’s Bible stories booklet and NT Bible she’d received over time. After much discussion with Celina, unfortunately the woman responded like many we met: not today, maybe later. But as we asked one more time if the wanted to receive Christ today, Yarelis raised her hand to put her faith in him. We walked through the sinner’s prayer with her, which she repeated back to us. Praying for her to share the gospel with her neighbors even though she’s young.

—Kierra

However, underneath her smile was a heavy burden she has been carrying for the last 12 years. After installing the filter and sharing the gospel with her, we asked if she wanted to receive the gift of salvation today. To this, she responded by saying that she cannot become Christian because it would not be genuine. She opened up to us about her first daughter whom she had lost 12 years ago. On one horrific night, Cassandra awoke to her 6 month old strangled next to her in her bed sheets. She also shared with us a dream she had, where she died and went to heaven, but could not find her daughter. When she finally found her, she was drenched in Cassandra’s own tears. To this, our group member Yuney responded by assuring her that her daughter is with the Lord, and that she is able to see her again if she chooses to follow Jesus. He told her the truth, that God also lost his son Jesus, so he also understands her pain deeply, and that He wants to heal her heart. Through the tears, we all tried to console her. Cassandra collapsed into my arms and accepted Christ in that moment. Yuney prayed for her in Spanish and instructed her on how to accept Jesus into her heart. It was a truly Holy moment that I was blessed to be apart of. Cassandra had accepted Jesus and been freed from 12 years of grief.

Our group (Abby, Tabitha, Richard, Flo) went with our local church guide Valencia to her husband cousin’s house. They also grew up together in Haiti. I (Abby) asked her questions such as “if you died tomorrow, would you go to heaven or hell” and she responded with unclear answers like “I don’t know.” She also didn’t see herself as a sinner since she hasn’t committed “big” sins like murder. I explained then that sins could also exist in the form of evil thoughts against others, allowing her to finally see herself as a sinner, accept Jesus to cleanse her heart, and pray the sinners prayer

Salvation of the old man in green

I was with JLai, Joanna, Emily, Juanyan, and Pastor Hermán’s wife. I began sharing the gospel with two men who were neighbors. In the middle of my sharing, the Pastor’s wife moved to be next to the man in green and began sharing the gospel to him in Creole. She used the same verses that we used, 2 Ephesians 8-9, Romans 3:23, Romans 10:9, Romans 5:8 and Romans 6:23. I continued my sharing with the man in Orange with Juanyan translating for us. During this time, a white elderly woman from another house who had been watching us came over and asked Emily if we were 7th day adventists. The zealous pastor’s wife turned around to rebuke her, telling the woman we were baptist before continuing with the old man in green. The elderly woman continued to speak to Emily in Spanish and began touching her hair, calling it ‘golden’. Justin began a game of baseball with the kids on the street. Meanwhile, the man in orange whom I was speaking to told us he had already accepted Christ and the pastor’s wife was able to bring the other man to Christ for the first time. He had never heard the gospel before. Praise the Lord! Juanyan pitched a couple innings of baseball with the kids in the street while the pastor’s wife shared the Gospel with a neighbor across the street. I was greatly impressed by this zealous woman.

-Norm

The first house we went to was the neice of our translator, Valencia, named Natia. She accepted the filter and listened to our gospel presentation but was distracted a bit by her son who was having a fit on the floor. However with her was a younger girl named Chichi that seemed at first a bit aggravated at us for evangelising to them. During the presentation she would make several comments and laugh or roll her eyes that the translator didnt translate to us. At one point in the presentation she even left to go inside the house but for some reason came back out and listened to the rest of the conversation. She ended up asking some questions and saying yes she would like to receive the gospel. Afterwards, we were told that she interject that she wasnt getting saved bc we wanted her too but for herself and that little bit of sass right at the end actually was very encouraging to hear.

Beline was pretty welcoming to us and was a direct neighbor to Valencia. She told us that her mother actually recivieved a filter in the past so she was a bit familiar with us. When she heard the gospel her response was a pretty straightforward yes! She seemed pretty happy that we had shared with her and we left in pretty high spirits even though we bagn to relize we were pretty late for the bus back home. On our way out the area we see that our extra translators, Daniel & Natalie (Victor was busy with us), had went around the corner to share with another group of boys that we just sitting by the street. We dont know waht was said there, but we were told that one of the guys decided to become Christian!
