         <description><![CDATA[<div>Results</div><div>Then kittens pupils responded in the normal way to a bright light, however their behaviour was strange regardless the orientation of stripes. They moved around mainly by touch rather than by sight and seemed to have little perception of depth. There was also no startle response when an object was suddenly thrust towards them. These deficiencies were usually overcome within 10 hours of normal visual experience. Some visual defects however were permanent,they bumped into stationary objects and followed moving objects clumsily and making jerky rather than smooth head movements. The kitten was shown only to respond to the moving objects with a similar orientation to the stripes they were exposed to. such as a kitten only exposed to horizontal stripes would move away from a sheet only with horizontal lines. <br>In the monitoring of neurons in the cortex, differences were again found.  only one was found to not be orientation specific. In each cat, no neurons had a preferred orientation within 20 degrees of the opposite orientation to lines in their rearing environment. The cats neurons only responded to the lines around the specific line the cat was reared in.<br><br>Conclusions<br>1) There was no evidence that areas of the cortex were silent or that areas of cortical cells were missing this suggests that the changes are not the consequences of degeneration.<br>2) The difference between the differently reared kittens suggests that neurons change their preferred orientation according to the stimulation they receive, matching the ability of the brain to respond to the features in its visual input.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Independent measures design<br>- Kittens were kept in darkness from 2 weeks old to 5 months old, only spending 5 hours a day in a visual display apparatus cylinder.<br>- The visual apparatus box had either vertical or horizontal black and white stripes.<br>- The cylinder was 2m long and had a diameter of 46cm. Half way up the cylinder, there was a Perspex floor for the kitten to move freely on.<br>- Each kitten wore a cone on its neck so it couldn't see its own body.<br>- At 5 weeks old they spent several hours a week in a well lit room where observations were made on: <br>&gt; ability to move<br>&gt; to jump from a chair to the floor<br>&gt; their startle response<br>&gt; visual placement</div>]]></description>
