I think it is really important for one to consider their ability to speak two or more languages as their strength!

They should view it as a skill and a strength. It is extremely hard to learn a language. Being bilinguals actually makes you smarter, and allows you to have a more expansive view of the world than other people.

  • The mythology about bilingualism my team's researched has in ways addressed the belief that the human brain is evolved to speak one language. The idea that speaking two or more languages is complicated and abnormal has been shut down by our brain's innateness and ability to process sounds and words.

  • Mythology that contributes to my feelings being an imposter is the lack of knowledge across so many topics. To counter this, asking clarifying questions or seeking out research that interests me has really supported me during these feelings.

Being bilingual can look like a spectrum of things and there isn't one set to be bilingual, meaning this low proficiency isn't caused by bilingualism, but by life experience.

At times, you may even question whether this situation has a detrimental effect on your native language. Nonetheless, I see it as an opportunity to broaden one's perspectives, delve into diverse literature across languages, and engage with a wide array of people.


    Additionally, when reflecting on Dr. Kroll's remarks about unforeseen paths, it's truly astounding—I NEVER imagined I would have the chance to participate in Dr. Kroll's lab meetings while studying in Korea, not at UCI. It's an immense surprise and privilege to be part of the lab of someone whose work I've admired and studied.
