Tennis is a racket sport played on a rectangular court. The objective is to hit a ball with a racket over a net and into the opponent's court in a way that they cannot legally return it.

Equipment and Court

• Racket: The racket has a handle (called the grip), a frame, and a mesh of strings.

• Court: A tennis court is a rectangle divided by a net. The back line is the baseline, and the side lines are the singles sidelines (for one-on-one matches) and doubles sidelines (for two-on-two matches). The areas where a serve must land are the service boxes.

Scoring

Tennis scoring can be a bit confusing at first, but it follows a specific sequence.

• Points: The first player to win four points by a margin of at least two points wins a game. The scoring goes as follows:

Key Strokes and Techniques

• Serve: The shot used to begin each point. The server stands behind the baseline and hits the ball diagonally into the opponent's service box. A server gets two chances to make a legal serve. If they fail both times, it's a double fault, and they lose the point. If the ball touches the net but lands in the service box, it's a let, and the serve is replayed.

• Forehand: A stroke made on the same side of the body as the dominant hand. For a right-handed player, this is on the right side.

• Backhand: A stroke made on the opposite side of the body as the dominant hand. For a right-handed player, this is on the left side.

• Volley: A shot hit before the ball bounces on the court.

• Lob: A high, arching shot hit over the opponent's head, typically used when the opponent is at the net.

Example of Play

1. A coin toss decides who serves first.

2. The server starts the point by hitting the ball into the opponent's diagonal service box.

3. The receiver must hit the ball back over the net before it bounces twice.

4. The players continue to hit the ball back and forth (rally) until one person fails to make a legal return. The person who hit the last legal shot wins the point.

5. The scores are announced, and the players continue to play until one player wins the game, then the set, and finally the match.
