The dark, bold colours and shadows are generic conventions for a typical horror and action thriller movie. The colours black and red connote a sense of danger and mystery to the audience which immediately draws attention and can be visually be identified as an action thriller movie. The image on the back of the DVD where the credits are shows a scene from the movie. The character appears to be holding a gun in his hand with full confidence. The gun connotes to the 'dark' side of business and how getting involved with the wrong people can lead to serious consequences and a dangerous lifestyle that leaves you forever on the run from the reality. The dark and formal clothing the character is wearing connotes to how he may be a serious and powerful figure whose job may be to leap into dangerous situations and taking risks. This can also be seen in his stern facial expression as it shows the type of behaviour and characteristics that he may posses in the film as well as his lifestyle.

The colours may also symbolise purity/innocents and evil within the main character. However, the actress Natalie Portman appears to be wearing white/ skin toned clothing in front of a black background. This may suggest that she may be the light in the darkness that is the main focus of the film as it's her face that is on the poster, meaning that she is also the main character that drives the story. The camera angles such as the medium shot angle of the two lovers in the poster shows the relationship they have with each other which carries the storyline and makes their love for each other seem even stronger and powerful. The use of this medium shot is also to present body language of the characters to easily define the film as a romance genre so people instantly recognise the characters as lovers. The mise en scene such as the setting in the background is highly effective as the titanic in the sea holds a particular connotation (iconography) for the audience. This allows the audience to decode these meanings of the setting and how it plays a major role for the storyline. The costumes that the characters are wearing also holds significance. We can tell that the characters are not from the 21st century as they both are wearing distinctive clothing. We can also tell that Rose is of a higher class than Jack as she is seen to be wearing expensive jewellery, a posh dress and has her hair done neatly whereas Jack is seen to be dressed more casually and less sophisticated, indicating his lower class.
