Why I love Teaching Science

I particulary enjoy teaching science at the elementary school level and feel that it is incredibly important. Earth Science is probably my favorite area to teach. When I was a classroom teacher, I planned scavenger hunts for my students which encouraged them to work in small groups to find various items, leaves, acorns, twigs, mosses, etc. My students would spend many afternoons exploring the woods and playground around our school collecting items that were on their lists. We would then use our five senses to investigate what they had found. Our class discussions led to additional PBL assignments about animals, soil, rocks, seasons, and plants. Valuable mathematical concepts such as sorting, graphing, and number operations could easily be incorporated as well. I believe that Science helps children make sense of the world around them.
