The jungle is first introduced when Rainsford falls off the ship he was aboard and swims to the island. It was described dense and snarled/ragged. As the story progresses, the reader can see how the jungle mirrors Zaroff's mind. The hunting event that takes place in the jungle exhibits its similarity to a laboratory for his ideas. Once Rainsford triumphed over Zaroff, the jungle begins to lose its haunting atmosphere.

"Dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs. What perils that tangle of trees and underbrush might hold for him did not concern Rainsford just then" (Connell 19).
This passage foreshadows the grim events that will take place in the short story. The the depths of the jungle allows the audience to imply the chaos it holds. The tangle of the roots and brush in the jungle symbolizes how messy and deranged Zaroff's psyche is.

"An unbroken front of snarled and ragged jungle fringed the shore"(20).
When Rainsford first saw the island, the jungle caught his eye. As he was looking for safety and shelter, the jungle presents itself as threatening and ominous. It symbolizes the future endeavors of savagery and wildness that he must face.
