After you answer the poll question, you will be put in two groups--whether you agree with the claim or not. You job is to defend the claim with all the evidence you can find in the story and in your research (and thoughts!). You're defending that Mrs. Maloney DOES NOT commit murder in the story. Determine support for this claim in your group and write them here.

She didn't murder her husband because she couldn't have that much strength in her arm. He just has head trauma due to being hit in the head with a blunt object, so he naturally passed out from the sudden pain. Mrs. Maloney was most likely not aiming to kill him, just thought of a last-minute idea on what to do so he wouldn't leave her since he wanted a divorce from her.

She didn’t kill her husband on purpose

At time it happened she was having lots of emotions about what he had just told. She was just trying to make him happy. "This is going to be a big shock to you, I'm afraid," he said. "But I've thought about it a good deal and I've decided that the only thing to do is to tell you immediately." And he told her. It didn't take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat still through it all, watching him with puzzled horror.

"So there it is," he added. "And I know it's a tough time to be telling you this, but there simply wasn't any other way. Of course, I'll give you money and see that you're taken care of. But there really shouldn't be any problem. I hope not, in any case. It wouldn't be very good for my job."

Katie in the previous post mentioned that she might have been in shock. One can argue the initial shock comes from her husband who delivers news we don't hear but know is horrifying to her. Then, we see her shock or change of minset here: "Her first instinct was not to believe any of it. She thought that perhaps she'd imagined the whole thing. Perhaps, if she acted as though she had not heard him, she would find out that none of it had ever happened." Then, she doesn't select a murder weapon; instead, she continues with normalcy by selecting lamb for dinner: ""I'll fix some supper," she whispered. When she walked across the room, she couldn't feel her feet touching the floor. She couldn't feel anything except a slight sickness. She did everything without thinking. She went downstairs to the freezer and took hold of the first object she found. She lifted it out, and looked at it. It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and looked at again --- a leg of lamb." Pre-meditation? I think not.

Maloney wouldn't have committed a murder if she was acting in self-defense. The story opens with her husband explaining a change in their life that leaves her in "puzzled horror". Punctuated by the fact that he states, "... there really shouldn't be any problem ... It wouldn't be very good for my job," it could be assumed that whatever he did or is about to do would stain his reputation as someone working with the police. Knowing this, he could have committed a crime or is about to commit a crime that would place Maloney in danger.

Mrs. Maloney didn't kill her husband. She struck him with the lamb leg, but it didn't kill him. He remained standing for a few moments more before he collapsed. The detective said, "the back of his head was broken to pieces." This implies part of his skull was damaged, not all of it. He could have had a seizure as a result of the undeniable head trauma gained from the attack. If the body was perceived as a murder, then an autopsy would never have been performed which would have revealed the real cause of death being a seizure or stroke as a result of the bodily aftershock and not murder.

Mr. Maloney’s bad news could’ve caused Mrs. Maloney to have outer-body experience and react based on a personality that wasn’t her own. On top of that, Mrs. Maloney is pregnant so that on top of her husband’s news could’ve pushed her over the top. The story didn’t give much of a background on Mrs. Maloney so we as the readers don’t know if she has any disorders or chemical imbalances that could cause some sort of alter in her thinking. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Maloney convinced herself that everything was okay, and it was just a normal evening as she was walking home from the store which intel means that she could have some sort of personality disorder which could cause her to turn into a different person when triggered.

(I feel like my perspective on it is interesting so I added mine anyway.)

Asia Mungo

Ms. Maloney did not commit murder against her husband. Mary is a regular wife that loves and cares for her husband. She has a clear alibi, she was at the grocery store buying ingredients for dinner that night for her and her husband. One witness was Sam the cashier at the store who had a conversation with Mary. When Mary came back home her husband was on the floor dead. She showed clear emotion when she was crying and she immediately called the police for help. This evidence is seen in the story, "She knew the number of the police station, and when the man at the other end answered, she cried to him. "Quick! Come quickly! Patrick's dead." This shows how she immediately called for help. When detectives arrived she answered the detectives questions and remained calm. Mary is a normal person that sadly found out that her husband was murdered in their home.

Mary Maloney is not guilty of murder. She was a loving and devoted wife who had no reason to harm her husband. On the night of his death, she was out shopping for groceries, preparing for their evening together. A store employee, Sam, spoke with her, verifying her whereabouts at the time. When she returned home, she was devastated to find her husband lying dead. Her immediate reaction was panic and sorrow—she called the police right away, crying as she reported what had happened. The story states, "She dialed the number she knew by heart, and when the officer answered, she sobbed, 'Please, come quickly! Patrick is dead!'" This shows her shock and distress. She cooperated fully with the detectives, answering their questions calmly. Given her emotional response and solid alibi, it is clear that Mary was simply a grieving wife who had no involvement in her husband's tragic death.

Mrs. Maloney did indeed attack her husband, however, we have no way of knowing if the impact of the lamb leg is what killed him. The story states that he remained standing for 4 or 5 seconds, likely the time it took for Mr. Maloney’s functions to shut down. It’s stated after that that he fell, a table was overturned, and he hit the carpet. It is more likely that Mary knocked him unconscious, damaging his skull, and the impact to the glass table is what shattered it. On top of that, we still have no idea what Patrick to Mary, which -depending on the specific information he gave her- goes a long way in and of itself to solidify if she was within her rights to react abrasively.
