Catherine McCauley was Born September 29th 1787 in Dublin, Ireland and died November 11th 1814. Catherine grew up in households that did not approve of her Catholicity, yet they still supported/ funded her mission. Became household manager of an elderly, childless, wealthy couples home. From the age of 12 Catherine’s lifestyle was usually centred around the poor so she watched as the poor lived their unlucky lives. She taught needlework and sewing to young women to try and help these girls in her community. Seeing this made Catherine want to do something about it so she leased a property in Dublin and used it to start a school for girls.

In Rerum Novarum section 3 paragraph 34, it talks about the common good. This action inspired Catherine McAuley to encourage communities to equally share benefits that may arise in their lives. McAuley's mission was to distribute necessities to the poor, this included material things such as food and water but also included education and sewing techniques. The Rerum Novarum also references the protection of the poor. This relates to the work of Catherine McAuley because it encourages people to defend others when there is question of ones rights. When someones rights and beliefs are in question, Catherine was quick to defend especially when it was the rights of women and the poor.

Since she offered her service to anyone, many people trusted her when she needed to bring people together. Catherine McAuley made sacrifices when she gave up her wealth and privileges to help the poor through her work, she did use some of her money but that was to startup programs that she initiated for the less fortunate. McAuley taught people to spend time in prayer and worship by partaking in church rituals as well as praying on their own. This strengthened the amount of Christianity in towns that Catherine visited.

She saw the problem that women were not receiving the same amount of education s men and she did something about it. On her journey to eliminate the injustice within society, she needed to accept that groups would not agree with what her mission was. In the schools she founded, learning about God and what He has done for us was a key part of her curriculum. She also taught valuable lessons that were portrayed in the Bible as parables and stories.

A group that continues similar participation in priestly, prophetic and kingly roles in the 21st century is Caritas Australia. Caritas value many virtues that are similar to not only Catherine McAuley but also to Rerum Novarum, these include the common good, dignity of a human being, caring for the poor, justice and the promotion of peace. Caritas bring people together by assisting people in need whilst still promoting God and his Kingdom, the do this by running programs in third world countries about Catholic social teachings and group reflections. Caritas, similarly to Catherine McAuley, see a problem in a less fortunate area and use their wealth and influence to address it. They did this by collecting donations in wealthy countries and using it to aid poorer areas overseas as well as informing the towns of God's work and how they can follow his teachings.

The interpretations of this parable that has been discovered in the last 10-20 years is that God is telling us how to act when we are faced in situations. God tells us to forgive people even when it seems hard. We can portray this in our lives by not making small problems bigger by overreacting and not offering people forgiveness. This value is prominent in the Church because not only is it the values of many parables but it also features in the 10 Commandments.

The genre of this parable is a narrative because it contains the structure thats includes a complication and the resolution to the problem. The problem in this parable is that the son used all his money and need aid from anyone. The resolution to this all was that the compassionate father welcomed him back with welcome arms. The story is told not being literal but having a metaphorical meaning.
