I remember that the science of reading was research that aimed to understand how people learned to read. It use information from many different fields of study such as psychology and neuroscience to uncover the cognitive and neurological processes that were used during reading. It had five key skills that are essential reading skills which included phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. It also put emphasis on evidence based instruction and ongoing progress monitoring. I also recall that a report that found most teacher preparation programs didn’t preparing teachers to teach reading that was based on the science of reading which cause states to make mandates that teacher would be trained in science of reading based instruction.

Bren Spence

I recall that the Science of Reading articles had fantastic reasons for why it is important for educators to know how students learn to read. The Science of Reading combines psychology and education in order to provide the best reading education to students. The Science of Reading focuses of phonics and phonemic awareness in-order to provide early intervention if the student needs the assistance. It also focuses on assessments, fluency, and consistency as a standard in order to get the students the best reading education that fits within the reading level of the child.

I remember that the Science of Reading tells us how we learn to read, why some struggle with reading, and how to effectively teach reading skills. I know that research has identified 5 critical reading skills, which are phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify individual sounds in words.

Phonics is the relationship between letters and their sounds.

Vocabulary is essentially the words that a student knows.

Fluency is the ability to read quickly and accurately.

Comprehension is how well a student understands and learns from a text.

The two main frameworks used to understand reading fluency is the Simple View of Reading, as well as Scarborough’s Rope.

There are also seven principles of the Science of Reading. The first one is reading is not a natural skill and it must be taught. Secondly, the five keys I mentioned earlier are all foundational skills that need to be taught systematically and explicitly. Thirdly, direct instruction is more effective than incidental instruction.

For number four, effective instruction must be evidence based. Fifth, High quality reading instruction is essential for students who are struggling, as well as all students.

sixthly, Engaging instruction is more effective than passive instruction. Lastly, early intervention is critical for students who are struggling with reading.

I remember that the science of reading is extremely evidence-based. Research on the science of reading has explored the cognitive and neurological processes involved in reading. Strategies have been identified to help students become proficient in things such as: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. However, I do recall that it has been a lengthy process to determine the best methods. Most commonly, the science of reading focuses on explicit and systematic instruction rather than incidental instruction of words. I also remember it being hard for teachers to learn exactly how to teach the science of reading. Many articles I’ve read have explained how the training process can be difficult.

I learned that the science of reading is an extremely important research based topic of how people learn to read and write. I learned that it takes phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension skills to be a skilled reader. I learned that the science of reading is not a program but a research based practice. I also learned that the science of reading is important for effect reading practice in teachers and students.
