In the Cyclops episode, he uses intelligence and fools Polyphemus by saying “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy” (Homer 315-16). This causes Polyphemus's neighbors to think he's crazy when he shouting that "Nohbdy has ruined me". Later in the story, he uses his intelligence once again to disguised his identity to fool his enemies. When approaching the suitors, they thought“a poor man came, a wanderer, driven by want to beg his bread” (Homer 1275-76) but later revealed himself and killed all his intruders.  

When Odysseus and his men were heading towards Scylla and Charybdis, he says to his men “ ‘Friends, have we never been in danger before this? Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?” (Homer 765-70) to try and be a leader and put his men in a better mood.
