Wall: Ai Qing

This poem is based upon the Great Wall of China. The first verse starts with a simile, stating how a wall is like a knife, splitting one side from another. The next verse continues on with this, stating that no wall could ever be taller, thicker, or longer than the Great Wall of China. In the 3rd verse, the author uses repetition to help enforce that the Great Wall of China is the 'best'. The next verses state that even if even if another wall was to be made 1 thousand times thicker, longer, and taller, it still wouldn't block out clouds, wind, rain, sunshine, water, air, and a billion people. Overall, this poem is meant to tell people that the Great Wall of China will be, and will forever be, the 'best' wall using techniques such as repetition to help overstate the point.

What can a poem do?: Darius V. Daughtry

This poem starts by stating what a poem cannot do, doing so in lowercase, most likely for the purpose of showing that the poem is very flowy, and makes it easy to read so the point is understood. This style continues over many verses, saying how poems will not protect you from a bullet, or bomb, or turn back time. After, it says what a poem really can do, and uses metaphors including 'the crust in your eyes'. The author then changes back, and says that a poem cannot swallow a bullet, but can swallow the hate and spit it back, including more similes like 'float like balloons'. In the next verse, the author uses repetition in the form of the word block, using it many times at the end of each line. In the end, the author concludes by wondering where we would be if everyone knew what poems could do.

This means that he is questioning himself, as he is doubtful.

Word: "barreling"

I chose this word as it conveys that the flames, nails, and shrapnel are being violently thrown. This is interesting as the author doesn't state who is throwing them, and it gives a mood that they don't like them.

This poem has 7 stanzas with 6 lines in each, except the last stanza with only 3 lines. This poem has no rhyming scheme, meaning it is a free verse poem.

The meaning of this poem is to symbolize what the world would be like if there was nothing, and to symbolize how beautiful the world actually is, and to tell the reader to give appreciation to the current world.

In the poem, the author uses all 5 types of imagery, each beginning a separate stanza. "What can you hear in the silence?" relates to auditory imagery, "and what can you see in the tangled vines?" relates to visual imagery, "What can you taste in the world after time?" relates to gustatory imagery, "and what can you smell on the nothing wind?" relates to olfactory imagery, and finally "and what can you feel on the ruined ground relates to tactile imagery.

The author uses very simple language, simply stating the small things that most people don't notice, and take for granted but the author uses simple words to express that these things are important in some way or another. All types of imagery are used, as they state all things that are not appreciated. The repetition of 'nothing' is also very apparent, as the poem is to emphasize what would happen to the world without even small things.

The effect that this poem has on the reader is to convey that the world in its current state is beautiful, and without many of the non-appreciated things, the world would be nothing.

This poem has 1 stanza and 26 lines. It has no rhyme scheme which means it is a free verse poem.

The meaning of this poem is to represent heritage, as it is heavily based upon existence, as the author uses lines like "Remember your birth, how your mother struggled

to give you form and breath." and "Remember your father. He is your life, also." to portray birth.

This poem uses auditory imagery, using the phrase "Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them, listen to them." This is used to tell the reader to remember their ancestors, and listen to what they say, which connects to listening to your family.

This poem uses repetitive language, as the word 'Remember' is repeated a lot. Other devices used include caesura, as the author uses colons, commas, and full stops throughout sentences to help give pauses, which change the impact of the sentence. Personification is also used, with the phrase 'They are alive poems', which suggests talking to your ancestors.

The effect of this poem is to emphasize to the reader to remember their past, representing heritage, portraying life and how they were born. This is to remind the reader to grow and listen to ancestors.

This is also use of anaphora. A simile is used in the phrase "Tears streamed down her cheeks, like raindrops down the window screen.", as the tears are being described as raindrops. This shows that there are a lot of tears, as there are usually lots of raindrops on a window screen.
