In the beginning of the novel Auggie can be described as self-conscious. Auggie states "Why do I have to be so ugly, Mommy?" (Palacio 60). Auggie does not like his face because he is deformed, and he is very aware that his face is not like the other kids. At the end of the novel, Auggie be described as confident. August states "I wasn't even thinking about my face.I was just smiling a big fat happy smile..." (Palacio 307). August's appearance would always be on his mind, but now he is very happy and didn't even care about his face. Even though, all the other kids in Beecher Prep barley talk to Auggie and call him names, Summer doesn't care what the others say she will still be his friend. Palacio, there are many themes in the novel, but the one that stands out is "Being different doesn't always mean bad." This theme means if you are different it does not mean you are a bad person all because your are different.  Auggie states "It's because of all the surgeries I had. Twenty seven since I was born." (Palacio 4). This theme realates to the novel because Auggie got a lot of surgeries. That isn't normal unless you have a deformity or a disability. Palacio, the main characters are Auggie.Jack Will,Julian,Summer,Mom,Dad,Via, and Mr. Tushman. The story takes place at Beecher Prep and Auggies house. The main character is August expeirences a problem, this problem is that Auggie doesn't want to go to school because of his deformity. Later on, Auggies best friend Jack Will has been talking bad behind Auggies back. Then, causes them to gwt into a fight. Then, Julian said something to Jack about Auggie that Jack didn't like, so he punched Julian in the face. In the meantime, Julian didn't go on the Nature Retreat trip because of all the trouble he caused. Jack and Auggie went into the woods and met seventh grade bullies. Jack stands up for Auggie, but then Amos,Henry and Jack come and deal with the bullies. After that, Auggie is much more accepted. Auggie is more accepted because people see the inner side of him, not the outer side . Julian got expelled and couldn't go on the Nature Retreat trip because of all the bullying and rumors. Now, Auggie gets rewards at graduation. Nobody cared about the way he looked anymore.The kids all wanted to take pictures with him.
