Organization of The Story

The book Persepolis is written in the form of a graphic novel. By writing it as a graphic novel the author was able to display much more emotion than if it was written as a standard book. The graphic novel allowed her to use pictures and show important things such the characters facial expression and what the setting looked like. If it was to be written as a standard book she could have been able to describe the scene and the characters facial expressions but this way it could be shown very clearly in an extremely powerful way.

The author also chose to not write in chronological order. The book includes quite a few flashbacks from the past. These flashbacks allowed the reader to see more easily how different events were connected to each other and it can build character depth. For example the author started the story off by quickly stating that the girls were being forced to wear veils. This happened in 1980 but by placing this event at the very beginning it allowed the reader to immediately see how the children growing up in Iran were being oppressed and as stated earlier it later created character depth.

When the revolution had started and oppression was being placed upon people in Iran Marji and her friends had realized it and even started play demonstrating in their garden. When she says “I had to take action” (Satrapi 10). It shows how even from a young age Marji knew that she disagreed with the oppression and therefore her and her friends even acted as if they were standing up and demonstrating against the oppression placed upon the Iranian people.

Photo citation : (Satrapi 10).

“I wanted to know what it felt like to be in a cell filled with water” (Satrapi 25).

This quote shows again how impactful the oppression that Marji grew up in was. After Marji learned about her grandfather being put in a cell filled with water Marji wanted to feel as if she was too in a cell of water. It was something as simple as taking a bath but because Marji grew up in and around oppression it was something different for her. Marji had said “I wanted to know what it felt like“ (Satrapi 25). Although in this quote Marji did not directly stand up to the oppression she still stood up against it and had courage because she herself wanted to experience a part of what her grandfather had endured. When she says later “my hands were wrinkled when I came out like grandpas” (Satrapi 25). It shows how by taking that bath she connected to the oppression of her grandfather.

Photo citation : (Satrapi 25).

Marji had been writing letters for her maid to the boy in the house next to hers and her father had found out. By writing these letters Marji was taking a big risk and had to have lot of courage. As Marji's father said “in this country you must stay within your own social class.” (Satrapi 37). Marji had stood up against that oppression and wrote letters for her maid. Marji did not agree with what her father and many others in Iran believed about social classes. Marji saw the oppression of her maid and she stood up against it.

Photo citation : (Satrapi 37).

Marji went with her maid to one of the demonstrations. Before this Marji's parents didn't allow her to go to the demonstrations but she was able to go with her maid. This supports the theme because not only did Marji have to build up the courage to against her parents to attend the demonstration but Marji also said that “Shouted from morning till night” (Satrapi 38). So she also stayed up all night so it must have been difficult for her, and took a lot of courage. Because of the oppression that was placed upon her she had reason for going to these demonstrations and was passionate about what they were fighting for.

Photo citation : (Satrapi 38).

During class one day Marji remembered that her teacher had previously said something that contradicted what she was telling them to do currently. Marji had told one of her classmates about this and she then went on to tell the teacher causing Marji to get in trouble. The oppression in Iran was taking place in the schools and Marji was able to realize this. She had therefore said something about it. It took courage for her to say something and she ended up getting in trouble for speaking up against the oppression placed upon her as a student in Iran.

Photo citation : (Satrapi 44).
