Group Dynamics

Stage 1. During the first session, participants will acknowledge any issues, concerns, and opposition toward the group. This will allow members to voice their own ground rules, which may be added for the sake of safety and participation.

Stage 2. This stage is often known as the Performing Stage, according to psychologist Bruce Tuckman, which establishes cohesiveness and productivity among members. Reassurance is key and is warranted for further participation and hope.

Stage 3. During the final stage, the closure of the H.O.M.E. group and the last session(s) are used to reevaluate each member's progress. Members can continue the group therapy program or finalize their journey with the facilitator. Sometimes, participants feel they need more opportunities to fulfill deeper goals, in which case guidance is offered to attend other therapeutic resources.

Image Cite:

(Group Therapy Techniques)

Procedures and guidelines for group therapy. The Group Psychologist (2011)

6, 7

List of factors:

Universality: the concept "we are not alone in our misery" is a key component to opting into substance use treatment. Often, reports of feeling alone or embarrassed about our habits/vices can lead to deeper issues and substance use. Realizing someone, somewhere, feels the same can make you feel less lonely.

Instillation of Hope: By the time a decision is made to seek treatment, participants exhibit an instillation of hope, and it is the group's duty to remain positive and optimistic.

Imparting of Information: this is crucial for understanding one's journey.

*Approximately 8.1 million adults in the U.S. have co-occurring disorders. This constitutes more than 40% of those with substance use disorder (Results from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and ... 2015)

Existential factors are discussed and can elicit reasoning for using substances, and one can process emotions and develop a new identity in regard to one's own actions.

Development of socializing techniques is a key factor in sobriety. A support network will be built to ensure one's success.

Finally, altruism, interpersonal learning, and direct advice are sought and hopefully achieved to establish motivation and accountability to maintain sobriety once the group ends.

9
