Protagonist Emil Sinclair finds himself stuck in the middle between the holiness and darkness in the world, confiding in many beliefs seen as strange at the time (it was published in 1919, Germany).
There are a lot of relations to heaven and hell and even the god named Abraxas (a god that caters to both the good and evil in the world).
If you're interested in darker themes, I'd definitely recommend this one.

A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge. Not since Hunger Games have I ever been enraptured by a Young Adult novel. This book features immense world-building (my favorite) and an interesting plot involving the city of Caverna, where the citizens live underground. Not only do they live in this strange city composed of tunnels, there is also the fact that the people are born without emotions, and instead have to train to wear a 'mask' that befits the situation. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton is a great book and so is the book that follows this one The lost World: Jurassic Park, The stories are a lot like the movies but the characters personalities are very different and that is why I like them so much. Also the stories in the movies are a little bit reversed from the books. I am a little mad that the movie isn't as good as the book and has missing scenes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Bruiser by Neal Shusterman. It follows a boy who doesn't know he is a bully but he starts to reflect on his actions and can understand how people see him as a bully. His sister starts to date a guy who seems bad to everyone. The brother goes about it the wrong way confronting the guy like a bully, the only way knows how to. He sees the wrong in his ways and so far they actually kind of became buddies. I liked it because it turns out he read the guy the wrong way and i like to try and understand people.

One book I would recommend is I See Reality. This book is made up of short stories about people struggling with problems in the real world from dealing with the death of a father to surviving a school shooting. It is interesting to see how the characters in each stories deal with these types of conflict.

Red Queen is an excellent read. Victoria Aveyard explores the concept of heroism, she best demonstrates this concept through self vs. self. The main character Mare Barrow has been living the life of a plebeian all her life in a very divided society. When push comes to shove Mare decides to to stand up to society which throws her life into what seems to be a never ending tornado.

If you've read the Harry Potter series you might like this. It is very different from the previous books but in the best way possible. Written in the form of a play it's easy to understand and quick to finish. The new book takes place 19 years after the last HP book. It focuses on Harrys youngest child, Albus and his bestfriend Scorpius. Unlike the previous book the protagonist is a slytherin. If you want a different take to the HP series then you should give the cursed child a try.
