At the Sedgwick County Zoo, there were many fun opportunities for children to get involved. The first example was in the penguin exhibit, the children I nanny as well as many others were standing in front of a penguin height chart. It gets the children involved in learning about the height and width of different penguins by comparing themselves. Secondly, walking into the Reptile exhibit there were so many pictures, posters, mini shows, and button options for children to look at and listen to. There is a huge playground for children to play, while parents take a break.

My favorite activity within the Sedgwick County Zoo was the Children's Farm and the petting zoo. There is food so you can feed the animals and they allow you to walk in and pet them. I think it's amazing that children are allowed to do so because it gives them an experience with animals they would never have with a normal house pet. In the petting zoo portion there are paint brushes dipped in water that allow the children to temporarily paint on the walls and sidewalks.

The last thing that I found very interesting was on my second visit to the zoo this week there was an event that lasts until december I believe called "Wild Lights". You can walk through it during the day but its much prettier during the night time. All the art pieces and objects light up and some also move. It is a great family and friend activity to get not only children involved but adults as well.

Botanica is an overall beautiful place and is fun with many events. The event I caught while being there was Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. My mother works with DCCCA so they were apart of the event where children and their families pick up pumpkins from botanica and take them home to either carve or decorate them. You get three days to decorate them then you bring them back for others to view. We got the chance to go and try to find our pumpkins. The entire garden was covered head to toe with so many decorated pumpkins. It was great to see so many families get involved.

The first section we went to was a plane area. It had many games about learning to control velocity and speed. There were real life planes in the room that were broken in half so that we can walk through them. In the planes there were posters and activities we could do such as learning about how a plane starts up and gets enough energy to fly off. This game in the photo above was a game of trying to figure out what is the best option to make the propeller spin the fastest and be most efficient. There were pieces to take off and put on and then once you think you have it correct you can hold down a button and the propeller would spin and on the screen it would tell you the efficiency of the propeller you made.

In the picture above they were working on a way to get the water to travel fasted and most efficient down to the bottom. The section had lots of hands-on learning. Near the water activity was a fossil exhibit where children can learn about different fossils, what animal it's from and what part of the body. They also have a section for children to dig for fossils. There was a tornado section and a tornado funnel where children and family can go inside and feel the wind power of how fast the wind blows during a tornado. There was a tornado fog machine that allowed us to watch how weather causes a tornado to form and what it looks like as it forms.

This was in the Space themed section. Within the section, there was a fake rocket ship that anyone can climb inside and feel what it's like to get launched in a rocket. While it was "launching" it showed the speed it was going, the weather around us, the velocity, and oxygen levels. This section was also very hands-on. There was a gravity area where you could click on a button and it would show you how that object would react to a no gravity area, would it spin? would it fall? would it stay still? Towards the end of the space-themed section, there were many more activities but one that was very interesting was the "space snack" activity. It had you pick which foods would be suitable for no gravity and which foods wouldn't be. Once done picking it showed you how the snack would drift around in no gravity if you let go of it. Lastly, there was an area that showed what it looked like to sleep in a no gravity area. They had a real example and was allowed for anyone to try and use it.

Something that I took away after visiting these exhibits was that it doesn't have to be coloring or painting to be art. Art is anything you can imagine, there are statues, nature, sculptures, and so much more than we realize. I also learned that there are so many interesting and fun ways to teach and get children involved without doing the bare minimum or the basics. I found it amazing how much art we have just in the city of Wichita, more should know about it!

My favorite place I visited was the Exploration place because there was a never ending list of activities to do. Every activity was either hands-on or visual and I think those are the two best ways to children or anyone to learn. I also liked it the best because I learned that every so often they change the spaced themed section to a different theme so that there are more things to learn and observe every year.

Application to Future

Ways I can apply these experiments for my future classroom is that there are many field trip opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Having these field trips would get the students involved not only in the community but to invest themselves with learning on their own. Without using these experiences as field trips I could take in perspective of how students prefer to learn and which is more beneficial. Each place I visited had hands-on activities, I would incorporate hands-on learning as well as visual learning.
