This, for me, can be considered as an effective (yet, unproductive) clickbait considering the fact that the elections are coming up and Filipino social media users are evidently divided and sensitive about it.

<del>...............................................................</del>

Simplicity: The caption bears simplicity but perhaps, too simple to even advertise such well-known artists. But then again, not all media-users know how to critically analyze posts such as this one.

Specificity: The caption was able to provide relevant information, and could have passed on to be true. However, for media-literate individuals, they can already tell it’s a dupe because no other information was included besides the place, time, and a list of very influential public figures.

Structure: With only very limited information presented, there is not much to be put in order on this one. Perhaps this could also be one of the reasons as to why this could be passed on as true because people who lack media and information literacy want information that is just right at your face and does not take too much time to comprehend.

Stickiness: The aim of clickbaiting for this post could be directed on both BBM-SARA supporters and also Leni-Kiko supporters as well. This could have been posted to falsely boast about their rally compared to the other party’s rally events. Such would then lead to the latter supporters to be angry…or could be that was what was expected of them.

<del>...............................................................</del>

Content and Visual Analysis: With the faces of the running president and vice-president, any viewer could tell it is about their campaigning for the elections, their signature color being red and green. BBM Supporters are likely to be more drawn to this since it encourages them. For me, personally, the visual construction of the images are poorly added. The Philippine Flag being the background connotes patriotism which I guess makes any Filipino social media user attracted to it. Even the pictures of the artists were of poor quality and choice. Not only were they “attempted” to stand out, but they just do not fit in with the color scheme of the post.

Contextual Information: Since I already mentioned that this post hardly contains any truth, then I believe that it was meant to influence their viewers. It already contains the place and time for their rally, and the supposed artists who will be present. I guess that is enough for any supporter to be encouraged to attend. This was posted after the Leni-Kiko rallies and the supporting artists who performed in the event received a lot of media attention. I believe that this was supposedly a response to that and that their chosen candidates have better supporting artists, even though this was a dupe.

Image Source: This post came from Facebook, and one of the uses of Facebook don’t really include being a reliable source of information. Sure, they can be a platform for social events, but information being shared here can be easily manipulated by those who post, who share, who react, who comment, or even be manipulated by the Facebook company itself such as censorship, sponsorship, etc.

Technical Quality: The texts and the images are both clear for the viewers to comprehend, albeit being false. The images are of good quality although poorly constructed together. I have seen posts about real rally announcements and unfortunately, they do kind of look like this one.

For this activity I would be evaluating the thumbnails of a famous YouTuber. This is MrBeast aka “the clickbait king”. The title of his videos are mostly constructed in a clickbait manner but what’s surprising is that what you read is actually what you get.

For evaluating messages

Simplicity:

Like in picture 1. The title itself is simple. No exaggerated words. Just “Paying people 10000 dollars to eat ghost pepper”. What you read is what you get. Simple and clear.

Specificity:

The title is specific with the videos content. What the title means is what really happens in the video.

Structure:

Just by reading the title, you are able to think of an idea of what the video would be. Because, it is constructed in a way that it’s easy to understand.

Stickiness:

It sticks to the people because the title itself is absurd. When you read the title, you begin to question. Who will eat a ghost pepper? Will he really give money to those who will ever eat it? What would happen? And, this is why clickbait sticks to the people because they always want to experience or see something new. Its intriguing and funny.

For the evaluating images

Content Analysis

In picture 2 what you see in the title is in the thumbnail itself. Unlike picture 1, there is a massive change in his thumbnails, because he already figured out what images or elements that a thumbnail should contain to attract attention.

Visual Analysis

One important element in the thumbnail is the face. In most of the thumbnails in YouTube, you can actually notice that there would be face with a “wow” face. This puts a suggestion in your mind. What are they wowing about? What are they excited for? And, that makes the audience want to click and watch the video.

Contextual Attention:

The image shows you what information you are going to get if you will watch the video. The title intends to inform you of what are the things that you should expect from the video.

These pictures are from google but each of these thumbnails are real pictures made by MrBeast.

Technical Quality:

The elements in the thumbnails differ from one another. Sometimes they contain two to three subjects. Others may have absurd objects. Like in picture two, thumbnail 1, there are snakes. The color of the image are also bright. Additionally, you can also the see in the thumbnail the subjects indicated in the title. Hence, with all of these elements, it can enhance and attract more people to click it. These results can also be seen in his view counts, ranging from 60 - 70 million each video.

It lacks specifics that makes it intriguing.

3. Structure

As we read, the caption's completeness is lacking, which is why it is intriguing because it is organized to stir up people's interest.

4. Stickiness

Of course, it's eye-catching because it advertises spoon-fed ways to make money or manipulate people's needs and attention. This is why people visit these websites because they advertise cheaper ways to get things as well as advertising remedies that will not truly help people.

Evaluating Images:
1. Content Analysis

The image depicts a doctor checking on a patient, a large sum of money, and a dog. The subject of the photo is portraying the caption really well however, there might be other interpretations depending on the individual witching it.

3. Contextual Information

Since some misunderstandings may occur, the images must be accompanied by the caption.

In a recent global study by Bailey et al. (2021) conducted across 30 nations, 45% of individuals worldwide are actively attempting to reduce weight. This ratio rises to two-thirds (60%) of those attempting to reduce weight in Chile and more than 50% in Spain, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United States. The youtube video thumbnail attached above is an example of compelling clickbait with no trustworthiness, as it is unattainable to lose that much body fat in a day.

-

A. Evaluating Messages

Simplicity

The purpose of the message is evident, and the core message put in the title is comprehensible even at first glance. Therefore, I rate the message above average in simplicity.

Specificity

The language used is specific and direct to the point, which can also be observed alongside the thumbnail. It is also concrete as it can be perceived through sight. The language of the message also does not use complicated words that may be misunderstood in different contexts. Therefore, I rate the message above average in specificity.

Structure

The message does not have a structure, given that it only has an attention statement. The message lacks all the other elements needed in its structure. It is also not effective, but it may have been had it used the logical order in its organization of ideas. Using the logical order, it would have introduced its method of losing weight first before asserting the weight loss itself. Therefore, I rate the message failed in structure.

Stickiness

The kind of message it is may grab many readers' attention, but it ends there; it will not stick to them or any particular culture. It is difficult for anyone to stick to that diet because it encourages a black and white worldview, which means that either one is trying to be good and eat ideally following their weight loss plan, or being bad and eating whatever they want, plausibly thoughtlessly making poor food choices and overeating. A plan only sticks to a person if it devotes itself to striving for a weekly weight loss for a long-term commitment. Therefore, I rate the message failed in stickiness.

-

B. Evaluating Images

Content analysis

I see a visual comparison of a woman’s body from an alleged weight loss from day one to day two. The image is about a woman losing many pounds in just one day. There is a woman in the photo, but her face is not shown. She is standing straight and is presented as the model of the extreme one-day weight loss hack. Viewers cannot look at the image in different ways as it clearly shows that the woman is seemingly heavier on day one than the “same” woman shown on day two. The size of the arms alongside that of the butt and the stomach also affirms this. The image effectively emphasizes what the message needs to center on and persuades viewers to watch the video. Therefore, I rate its content average.

Visual analysis

The image was composed of bright colors as background and a clear photo of a woman's body in front. The most important visual elements were the arrows and the text placed above each photo. The colors used were bright to entice the viewers. The image cannot be looked at differently as its intention is clear and straight. Lastly, the design choices convey that the content creators want viewers to click on and watch their videos as soon as it appears on their feed. Therefore, I rate its visuals average.

Contextual information

Only the text of the alleged progress from day one to day two of the weight loss accompanied the image. The text does not change how I see the photo since they go well with each other, trying to persuade the viewer into watching the video. The textual information was intended to influence what and how viewers see weight loss, that is, as a ready-made solution rather than a long-term commitment. The image only provides its definitive context with answers for the "Where?" and "Whom?" questions. Therefore, I rate its contextual information below average.

I found the thumbnail image on Youtube, and the content creator seemingly created and edited the image to use it as a thumbnail. The source is not reliable and trustworthy, with a record of constant click-baiting. I found the image on a youtube video used as a thumbnail. Therefore, I rate its image source failed.

Technical Quality

The image is large enough for its purpose, and the color, light, and balance are true and well-used. However, it is not a quality digital image because there is a noticeable distortion but no pixelation. The image is in a file format that I can use, and there are no other restrictions that viewers like me need to consider. Therefore, I rate its technical quality average.

This picture exemplifies clickbait. It tells the story of 15 adorable youngsters that tragically change into something miserable.

EVALUATING MESSAGES:

Simplicity
The message is straightforward but intriguing. The objective of this message, which is to attract attention, is explicitly indicated in its title.

Specificity
Its headline uses explicit and straightforward wording. The terms that were accentuated in the text prompt readers to expect a terrible scenario.

Structure
The title did not provide comprehensive information and left the reader hanging, allowing them to be curious.

Stickiness
The title alone is enough to pique the reader's interest. It piques the reader's interest and leaves them wondering what happened to all those adorable children. So, to fulfill their curiosity, they can't help but read.

EVALUATING IMAGES:

Content Analysis
The photographs show a pretty little girl and a hideous-looking individual, together with a caption that says how 15 attractive children surprisingly transform.

The Kingmaker is a documentary film about the Marcoses. Because of the upcoming Presidential election, netizens, especially the Anti-Marcos, took actions to spread the truth and awareness, one of these are by providing free access to the documentary film. Many have shared the film on their social media account. But it is difficult to catch the interest of the Marcos apologists and help them know the truth about the Marcos family. To make it a lot easier, a netizen posted this on Facebook with a caption that will indeed catch the interest of the people. I must say the clickbait is effective.

A. Evaluating Messages

1. Simplicity
The caption of the Facebook post is simple and short but it clearly states what the writer wants to relay to the netizens.

2. Specificity
The writer used both English and Filipino language on his post which are the languages that are commonly used by his target audience.

3. Structure
Despite the untruthfulness of the caption, the caption was well-written and the thoughts were well-arranged.

4. Stickiness
The caption written by the Facebook user catches a lot of people's attention. Martial Law is such a controversial yet interesting topic. With the caption saying that The Kingmaker is a documentary that showcases the "good deeds" of the Marcos family, a lot of intrigued people will click the link provided and watch the show.

B. Evaluating Images

1. Content Analysis
The picture attached to the post is the official poster of The Kingmaker, a documentary centered on Imelda Marcos and of course, the Marcos family. Imelda Marcos is a very known person even in this generation and including the poster on the post will garner a lot of audience.

2. Visual Analysis
The poster is such an eye-catcher. It is composed of a black-and-white filtered photo of a slum area with a colored photo of Imelda dressed in a beautiful red Filipiña in a frame that separates her from the rest. If the photo is not thoroughly analyzed, you would really think that the caption about the documentary written by a Facebook user is true to its words (which really is not).

3. Contextual Information
The caption of the image is not true but it was used by the Facebook user who posted it to catch the interest of the audience especially the Marcos apologists. The Kingmaker is a documentary film that aims to reveal the truth, and it sure did tell a lot of truths about the Marcoses, and those truths directly came from them. But some audience, if you tell them what the documentary really is all about, are not willing and open enough to spare their time to watch the film because they do not want to ruin their pride. In order to have them to watch a film like this, one has to lie about it, and that's what the Facebook user did when he wrote his caption.

4. Image Source
The image is the official poster of the documentary film The Kingmaker which was then used by the Facebook user.

5. Technical Quality
Because of Facebook's image quality, the quality of the photo is not is not as high compared to the original, but it is still large and the quality's high enough for the people to clearly see it. Although it is clear that the image came from the poster of the documentary film which the Facebook user is promoting, he did not give proper credit and did not provide the source of the image.

Evaluation of the Message:

(Simplicity, Specificity, Structure, and Stickiness)

In terms of simplicity, the message has an indirect method of stating its main topic. As an article that is supposed to deliver quality news, it delivered the message in an exaggerated way that includes unnecessary details. Moreover, the language used is informal, and slang words were used, especially in the statement that was presented in the clickbait. Additionally, its structure is also unorganized. Some statements were also incoherent, and biased. I can say that if a reader would not evaluate the quality of the message, the person would be tricked into believing that the message behind the clickbait is reliable.

Evaluation of the image:

(Visual Analysis, Contextual Information, Image Source, Technical Quality)

Buzzfeed News, the source of the clickbait that I presented, is a site that claimed to be a reliable source of information and news, but after my evaluation, I can say that Buzzfeed does not adhere to the ethical rules of journalism Some of the statements presented were biased and unreliable.

After evaluating the image, I noticed that the result of the product shown was overemphasized. It implies a subjective review of the products and that the results were inflated. The image mirrored an instant and rushed effect on the woman's face. It can also be said that the afterimage may be edited to gain more readers, thus poorly influencing and deceiving the public.

I have evaluated this clickbait as poor in quality and unreliable for its message is overstated in a way that inflates the results of the product presented. Furthermore, the message gives the audience a preconception that the product gives instant and best results, generalizing its effect on the diversity of the public The image presented could also be misinterpreted for it suggests a deceiving concept. With this, the presented clickbait can be improved objectively, giving the readers information on the side effects of the product and the disadvantages that it may cause to the public. In terms of its source, it can also include experts' evaluations to support its claims and state the message in a more structured and formal manner. Through these, the public can be informed reliably, thus cultivating honesty, accuracy, and fairness.

I chose this youtube thumbnail because of how interesting the title sounds. Now, let us start evaluating the click bait example based on its images and text.

Evaluating Messages

Simplicity

The caption of the video is clear and a bit dry. It’s not the typical youtube clickbaiting caption that has “ not a lie” text on their videos. Hence, the person who uploaded this, relays what he wants us to know about the people by providing a blurry caption.

Specificity

Since the caption is just a short text, there is no specificity because it generalizes the idea of the “people you won’t believe exist”. To be specific is to show the real and concrete message of the caption.

Structure

I think that because of the clickbait agenda of the video, the youtuber did not fully lay out the contents inside the video. It simply stated that there are “20 people you won’t believe exist” instead of something that goes like “ 20 rare people” or something that really explains the concept of the video.

Stickiness

The youtuber did a great job grabbing my attention because of the phrase that goes “ you won’t believe”. Which I think, tickles your curiosity and the next thing you know, you’re already watching the video.

Evaluating Images

Content Analysis

As I watched the video, the pictures made sense because there is actually a person looking like a doll and a person with two heads although they are not runway models in real life.

Visual Analysis

There are two pictures used in the thumbnail which shows (1) a person looking exactly like a doll and (2) two individuals with one body. Moreover, the runway model with two heads does not match to what the video shows because they are not runway models but primary teachers.

The backgrounds and the colors used are subtle so it give off a clean and an eye-catching image.

Contextual Information

The relationship between the image and the caption correlates to each other in such a way that it depicts people that you won’t really believe exist.

I found this video on youtube as I was scrolling through the home page. The channel who uploaded the video makes contents about education and entertainment purposes. At the end of every video, they provide the real names and stories of the person involved but they did not add a link or a source of their information.

Technical Quality

The image’s size fits the purpose of the video. Also, if you’re going to examine the image, the color, light, and balance are true. The image’s quality is also standard so it is not hurtful for the eyes. Overall, I don’t see any problems with the image used.

As someone who has participated in multiple YouTube projects over the past 2 years, I found clickbait to be one of the most effective tools to gain engagement. Though "clickbait" has much worse side on the platform with people misinforming or just plain lying about their content, the concept of clickbait has also skyrocketed many creators that may have been as successful as they are now if it wasn't for clickbait.

Evaluating MESSAGES

Simplicity:
The image is not overtly sophisticated and the title is constructed in a simple sentence that is easy to understand. It is definitely a straight-to-the-point message.

Specificity:
The image and title serve hand-in-hand to deliver a specific message to the viewer, which is that the story of the creator’s experience with the world’s loudest and quietest room. The message is, therefore, specified.

Structure:
The title facilitates on bringing the viewers’ attention to the image and vise-versa. It also gives the viewers a clear expectation for the video. The overall message is organized in a two-faceted structure.

Stickiness:
The image utilizes contrasting colors and naturally leads the viewer to the center of the image. The text within the image also sticks to the viewers as they are given an expected time. The title also uses comparatives words such as “loudest” and “quietest” to bring a greater effect of wonder and curiosity to the viewer.

Evaluating IMAGES

Content Analysis:
I can see a man in a bright orange overall covering his ears while sitting in a seemingly empty room. The image conveys the atmosphere of the setting of the video in a direct manner so as to not implant any other expectation except for the creator intended to convey.

Visual Analysis:
The image is very simple with the focus being on the man in an overall and the background being a minimalistic looking wall inside the implied loudest or quietest room. The text within the image is brief and gives the viewers a kind of expectation and it might prompt some disbelief that will lead the viewers to watch the video to either confirm or refute their opinions.

Contextual Information:
The title that accompanies the image helps give light to more context especially between the two images. Since they are quite similar in composition the context of being in the “loudest” room is vastly different from being in the “quietest” room. The contextual information does bring a sense of distinction to the images.

I have found this image on YouTube while scrolling months ago when this video was posted and instantly stuck with me. The source is very reliable, being that it is from a large and reputable YouTuber, and the content within the video is verified.

Technical Quality:
The image is well organized and created with careful detail in line with some basic principles of good photography. The resolution is high definition and shows no sign of errors nor blemishes in its editing process. You can share the images to your social media accounts but you cannot claim the image as your own.

Clickbaits are ad contents that avert the viewer's attention to clicking the video, article, or link to a webpage given to them. It has become a practice for most advertisements to attract more people to their product, brand, content, and many more. Yet it may be misleading and confusing, which may ruin the trust of the people, making them mad.
--------------------

EVALUATING MESSAGES

+ Simplicity:

The message shown is simple and clear for the viewers to read easily. The result leads the person to click the link immediately.

+ Specificity:

The message is given and seen by everyone as to how simple the message is. The message is straightforward. Yet most experienced media users can see the trick behind the game ad when they research the game contents because of the little information given in the ad.

+ Structure:

The idea is in the message and video presented even with little information. The ad contents are already well-structured enough to persuade all people with the impression that makes it stand out.

+ Stickiness:

The message is simple and direct enough to grab the attention of the viewers. The aim is to bring determined gamers to play a game that few people want to play. The overall content and visuals are extremely good to be deceived.

+ Contextual Information:

The information shown in the advertisement is completely different content from the original.

With politics being such a prominent issue on social media these days, everyone is keeping a watch on the candidates' every move. It appears that the person has died based on the way the photo has been modified. If you don't read the caption, you'll presume the person in the photo has died. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. died as a result of trauma he sustained during a previous debate. The caption and the photo are incompatible. They could have picked a different photo to avoid confusing the viewers. The message has already served its purpose since it is noticeable and understandable to any audience.

Specificity: Based on the title and the language used in the video, the language used is English. It is specific and concrete. The words have no additional meanings and cannot be misconstructed. It is straightforward, and oversight is unlikely to happen.

Structure: The message, precisely the title, is organized and easy to follow. The order of adjectives starts with a quantity, then followed by quality or opinion—" 15" for portion and "painful" for view. There is no more effective way to arrange the ideas above because it is the best possible title for this video.

Stickiness: In this case, Yes. The messages display coherent and unity of ideas. It is acceptable and can even persuade the viewers to click on the video immediately. The ideas flow so smoothly that it is even hard to notice that it is "clickbait." The youtube channel made it purposely so the track could gain viewers' attention quickly.

B. Evaluating Images

Content Analysis: On the thumbnail, I can see the star of Maleficent, Angelina Jolie. She is on a make-up chair and being put on with prosthetics. A close-up image is enclosed in a yellow circle with an arrow pointing. As a visual message, the image does not correspond to its title that emphasizes "painful." Angelina looks calm and relaxed, totally in opposition to the message it tries to convey.

Visual Analysis: The image is composed in a zoomed manner and even emphasized in a circle. Angelina Jolie is seen putting fangs on her teeth. The most important visual element is the image enclosed in a yellow circle with the hands-on her cheek putting the prosthetics on. There is even an arrow in yellow to emphasize the pain she feels while someone is putting it on. The thumbnail image cannot be looked at differently other than for what it is.

Contextual Information: The information that accompanies the image is the actor being in pain while on prosthetics, and it did somehow change how I perceived that image. It made me feel how painstakingly uncomfortable the actors were during these sessions. However, the textual information intended to influence how I saw the compilation of videos and photos. It is essential to understand that the actors weren't forced to wear such prosthetics. The actors auditioned for such roles, it came with a contract, and they got paid to portray the character. The context the information provides is in contrast with the compilation. It does not explicitly answer where, how, and why.

Image Source: The image can be found on youtube. The source does not provide information about the image's origins; therefore, it is not reliable and trustworthy. I think that the youtube channel "TheThings" found the photos in a database and used them in another context to convey meaning. I saw a timelapse of how they did Angelina's make-up, but this channel narrated it as "a painstakingly painful process ." In an interview, Jolie said that "it was like living a childhood fantasy."

Technical Quality: The image is large enough for me to see that those actors were really in pain when they were relaxing, waiting for the artists to finish their craft all along. The color, light, and balance are high quality and without pixelation or distortion. However, the image is not in a file format that I can use. I still have to screenshot it, which might affect the quality. There were no copyright or restrictions that I needed to consider.

5-Minute Crafts is notorious for its clickbait thumbnails. They had always claimed to post “life hacks” but the things they presented were far from being life hacks. Instead, they were just unnecessarily inconvenient ways of doing things.

Evaluating Message

Simplicity: The video title is written in capital letters which makes it stand out among the various suggested videos on YouTube.

Specificity: The title and description are both direct to the point which can attract viewers, especially those interested in watching videos about taking care of their hair.

Structure: Both the title and description are well-written. They are concise and arranged in a way that they directly tell people the context of the video.

Stickiness: The title of the video can immediately grab people’s attention due to the way it is written. Its claim to save one’s time can make it more intriguing for the audience as everyone is becoming more fascinated with time efficient things and methods.

Evaluating Images

Content Analysis: The thumbnail showed a girl with pink hair and neon handprints. Although the hair design isn't fantastic, I think it still is a good thumbnail due to its uniqueness.

Visual Analysis: The thumbnail features a collage consisting of two photos of a girl with straight pink hair. The left photo shows a girl caressing its hair, while the right shot gives an emphasis on the neon handprints on the hair. The neon accent on the right photo, I believe, conveys a sense of a transition from dull hair to a more vibrant one.

Contextual Information: The context in the description box and title makes the photo more understandable. It implies that a light touch on the hair can make it more vibrant and appealing. In order to ensure that viewers watch the entire video and understand the context, the textual content is factual yet succinct.

Image Source: I found the content on YouTube while I was looking up for some clickbait examples. The image is the content’s thumbnail which I believe is originally created by the channel, 5-Minute Craft to enhance their potential of getting more viewers. Hence, it has a reliable source because the content and the source are similar. However, when it comes to the message of the video, I do not think that the information is reliable since the hacks presented appear to be inconvenient and unnecessary.

Technical Quality: The image is uploaded in high-definition quality but the viewers are unable to zoom in the thumbnail as it is not included in the video itself. Hence, I could not testify if it pixelated or not. As for its color, light, and balance, I like the way it presents its thumbnail in vibrant colors. In that way, it would be an eye-catching image that could easily attract possible viewers.

Clickbaits are designed to entice a lot of people with its exaggerated headlines. When we click on the link, there is content, but it is heavily covered in advertisements. As a result, the article or video is merely a bait that leads us to the ad, which is the true purpose of the content. When enough individuals are exposed to the advertisements, a percentage of us will become purchasers of the advertised goods. Thus, clickbait becomes a tool to deceit people and possibly exploit them with fake knowledge.

EVALUATING MESSAGES

1. Simplicity: There is a clear and simple headline in the article above. The purpose of the post is evident; that is, it tackles about the signs that you already have cancer. This is easily understood and comprehended by a lot of people, enticing them to read more about the article.

2. Specificity: The language used in the article is concrete and specific. The tone is direct and formal, and the core message is already implied in the headline.

3. Structure: The article is constructed in a way that compels the audience. There is a clear usage of active voice, and the ideas are organized although the whole website is mapped with advertisements all over the place.

4. Stickiness: The article targets and sticks individuals who are conscious about their health. It is grounded to misinformation and exaggerated contents to keep the attention of the audience.

EVALUATING IMAGES

1. Content Analysis: The image shown in the article make it seemed like cancer is something that you can see physically. To successfully promote the article, it uses the image of a woman with a worried or serious face while feeling her cheeks.

2. Visual Analysis: The pale yellow background of the article is associated with diseases. It is used to signify cancers such as leukemia and sarcoma. Meanwhile, the worried woman signifies vulnerability and weakness. Both of these elements are used to show that the article is serious and must be read.

3. Contextual Information: The image correlates with the caption of the article in a way that they imply that cancer can be felt tangibly and seen through naked eyes. This causes a lot of readers, specially those who are health conscious, to worry about getting cancer by basing solely on their physical appearance. Through the use of misleading and deceiving images and texts, the article gains attention and profit.

4. Image Source: The article never provided the source for the image which makes the whole article more inaccurate and unreliable. Moreover, the picture is surprisingly used in different health-related articles like acne, pimple, and oily face problems; all of them are also clickbaits with no sources about the information and pictures they're sharing.

5. Technical Quality: The image is simple and balanced which is typical in articles that offer medical advice and health information. It is in moderate quality and .jpeg file format. Because it is used widely by a lot of clickbaiting websites, the picture seemed to come from a free stock photo website with no copyright holder.

It does not give any confusing clues and is written well.

2. Evaluating Image
Content Analysis: The video is about Keith, one of the four Try Guys, turning into a chair for Eugene, another one of the Try Guys. This is because in their friendship, Eugene is not showy of his love for his friends while Keith is the opposite. So, Keith secretly turns into a giant chair for Eugene to sit on so Keith's "lap" and get a hug from him at the end.

Visual Analysis: The thumbnail is Eugene being "unhappy" with the video's ending on the right side while Keith is showing his usual odd expression to gain the viewer's attention. At the center of the thumbnail is Keith turned into the giant chair for Eugene.

Contextual Information: the title states "Keith turning into Eugene's Worst Nightmare", so in the thumbnail, it shows Keith turned into a giant chair since over the past videos, Eugene does not like sitting on Keith's lap and being shown affection to, so his expression in the thumbnail captures that sitting on Keith's lap is his "worst nightmare". However, such being Eugene's "worst nightmare' should not be taken literally since the Try Guys do these types of videos solely for entertainment while depicting their friendship and true selves.

Image Source: The Image or "thumbnail" of every Try Guys video is originally created by their Video Editors, usually by their Senior Editor, YB Chang.

Technical Quality: Everything regarding the video is high-quality, from the audio down to the video itself.

Clickbaits allure potential audiences because of their sensationalized headlines and thumbnails. Their purpose may include the following: to gain site views, to obtain profit from the pop-up ads, to scam the site visitors, and to promote misinformation about a certain topic. With that, it is essential to evaluate messages and images to protect oneself from modern misleading tactics.

The screenshot above shows two examples of clickbaits that take advantage of the audience's gap of knowledge about saving electricity and the uses of baking soda.

EVALUATING THE MESSAGE
1. Simplicity
Both of the clickbait articles deliver the message. They aim to know how to reduce one's electric bill (left article) and the surprising tricks of baking soda (right article). However, the headlines are quite broad since these clickbaits use the technique of cliffhangers. As a result, they intensify the curiosity of the readers to visit the web pages.

2. Specificity
The languages used are in layman's terms, and both articles are specific. However, they do not mention enough concrete evidence regarding the efficacy of the gadget that saves electricity and baking soda for other household and health purposes.

3. Structure
The ideas are well-organized and well-arranged. Both articles provide sub-headlines that encapsulate the thoughts of the succeeding paragraphs. However, the overall layout is not appealing due to the cluttered pop-up advertisements throughout the webpage. This distracts the audience while they read the content.

4. Stickiness
These articles command the readers' attention. The left article targets people who are inclined to energy-saving gadgets. On the other hand, the right article attracts those who want to use accessible and natural ingredients in their everyday lives. However, since these clickbaits do not provide enough concrete evidence, they spread misinformation to their readers.

EVALUATING THE IMAGE
1. Content Analysis
For the article on the left side, the image seems to show an unusual way of saving energy by plugging something into an outlet. This is quite misleading since the article promotes a gadget, not a stick-like object. For the article on the right side, the image seems to be edited and exaggerated. For example, the pouring of the baking soda is too much, and the foot and the basin of water have so much dirt. However, both images are visually effective in appealing to the audience.

2. Visual Analysis
For the article on the right side, the stick-like object is the essential element of the image since it promotes an unusual way of saving electricity. It also adds suspense to the readers since most people know that it is not permissible to plug sharp materials into an outlet. Aside from this, the image of the article on the left side contains baking soda and a dirty foot. These elements provoke curiosity among the audience, leading them to read more about it.

3. Contextual Information
Both images are connected to the articles' headlines. Aside from alluring the readers, they do not intend to be factual since they lack credible sources. With this in mind, the context of the information is solely based on gaining more site visitors. Such is a way to increase profit due to the pop-up advertisements throughout the web pages.

4. Image Source
The clickbait articles do not provide any source for the images. These images might have been edited to coincide with the content's message. Hence, the images provided are not reliable and trustworthy.

5. Techincal Quality
Both images suit their purpose of attracting the audience. For the image on the left side, the contrast and brightness seem to be edited. Such is a way to emphasize the stick-like object and the outlet. For the one on the right side, the picture is edited since the baking soda and the foot are both cropped from another image source. Both images have a moderate quality, but they cannot be used nor downloaded. There are also no copyright restrictions mentioned.

Clickbait links (left to right):
1. https://dailytechadviser.com/electrosave-review-n/?utm_source=taboola&utm_medium=referral#tblciGiBQIz1eFI5TkKy3f_6ixC4c18lG-j3YhADvkjXfG6-VAyDBgFAox-yuuNf9xK6bAQ

2. https://www.restwow.com/worldwide/baking-ta?utm_medium=taboola&utm_source=taboola&utm_campaign=to-rw-baking-bc2-des-0w-ct-16032d&utm_term=cnnphilippines&utm_bid=ws1KPUlLFoE3KLezw1nWUmdwq3_0Xr8rplkOF7ey_Nw=

Clickbait is a tactic that can attract and entice people to click and view that article, image, video, link, etc. These are usually in the title or thumbnails of that online content.

“IU’s Favorite Ring That She Wore Everywhere is Actually A Couple Ring”

“The meaning of IU’s couple ring and her partner’s surprising identity”

That was the title of an article that had me clicking full of surprise just to end up reading an article that’s totally different from what the title tries to emphasize.

This is an example of a clickbait.

Evaluating the message:

As a big fan of IU, a singer-songwriter and actress, I was surprised to find an article with these kind of title. It made me think that finally my IU found a special someone, and seeing that she wears their ring everywhere means she’s now comfortable enough to share it with the public. But, to my surprise that ring was just a so called couple ring between IU and her fans.

The title of this article targeted her fans and made sure that every single fan of IU out there clicks it right away the moment they see the title (and supporting thumbnail image) by creating some sort of mysterious identity – identity of who is the other person that owns this ‘couple ring’.

The article relays its message effectively and it has the qualities of an effective message with its simplicity, specificity, structure, and stickiness. It has simplicity as its message is clear and its purpose is evident; It has specificity as the language used is specific and concrete; It has structure with its ideas being well arranged and organized; Lastly, it has stickiness as its ideas stay around our culture and it definitely commands the attention of the readers.

The message of this article is effectively relayed to its audience however, the only problem here is that the title implied a slightly different message to its content just to make sure it grabs the readers’ attention in no time, and it was obviously done that way to work as a clickbait.

These kinds of articles cannot attract just any person but it targets a specific population, in this case the fans of IU’s music. These articles might be limited to a specific number of target audience, but that made it easier for them to make an effective clickbait.

Of course, I was not extremely disappointed by the little plot twist in the content because the article made me want to have that ring too, but at the same time, it made me realize how clever yet misleading these deceptive clickbait texts or images could be.

This is just a little example of a clickbait as it did not affect me much (or anyone who read it), but clickbaits could be even more than this. In some cases, the use of clickbaits could result to misinformation; and this tactic could be used to manipulate the public.

Evaluating the image:

In my chosen example of a clickbait, the image just somehow serves as a (visual) support to the title of the article and it helps the reader digest the message of the title quicker and easier.

The image clearly contains IU wearing her ring in different times and places. The image served as a proof that IU wore that very ring a lot of times in public. The use of red circles and arrows to point and highlight her ring also contributed a lot to make it more intriguing by making it look mysterious. The image also made the article look like it is reliable since they have these proofs to back their claim.

However, as mentioned earlier, despite these images being genuine and not fake, it still works as a clickbait. This is because aside from the addition of the red circles and arrows to make sure looks even more appealing, the title of the article itself made the image seem even more intriguing than it should be. Had the images been used with a different title that is more honest and direct to the point, the image would not have been considered to having clickbait qualities.

For example, if these images were accompanied with the title along the lines “IU Wearing Matching Rings Between Her And Her Fans” or something like that, these images would not have clickbait qualities. Although, such a straightforward and simple title would not be as intriguing and would not urge us to click and view them instantly; as this removes the element of mystery that the clickbait title possess.

Koreaboo is a Korean media and entertainment company dedicated to promoting Korean pop culture to the rest of the world. Their website provides the most shareable content about Korean music, dramas, celebrities, movies, etc. and is known for its misleading, drama-causing and clickbait articles.

A. Evaluating the Message
1. Simplicity
The purpose of the article is evident, which is to inform the readers, especially K-pop fans of the two popular idols in Korea and somehow, give hope to their shippers. The message is simple and clear, but the headline of the article can also be misleading.

2. Specificity
The language used is specific and concrete. The readers can easily understand what the author was trying to imply. However, some of the phrases in the article, especially the headline, have additional meaning or can be interpreted in different ways.

3. Structure
The ideas are organized and easy to follow. However, the content is too short and ends up hanging which leaves the readers and fans curious about what happened next.

4. Stickiness
The message of the article can pique the interest of the readers and K-pop fans. Its headline is stated in an exaggerated way which can easily attract fans who are curious about the relationship status of the two idols. The caption leads the readers to immediately click the article and read its content.

B. Evaluating the Image
1. Content Analysis
The photo in the article depicts a female Korean celebrity sleeping and a male K-pop idol smiling while looking at her. This image can be interpreted by the readers in different ways which catches their attention and fuels their curiosity.

2. Visual Analysis
The image is eye-catching and well-chosen to grab the attention of the K-pop fans. There is nothing much in their background, but the most important visual element in the picture is their matching black outfits. Without reading the content of the article, the readers might misinterpret the picture of the two idols.

3. Contextual Information
The photo is accompanied by a caption which can provoke the readers to click the link of the article immediately. In my perspective, the text does not change how I see the image for the caption is not specific and it only adds fuel to my hope and curiosity about the status of the two idols.

4. Image Source
I found this article on Facebook as I am a follower of Koreaboo’s Facebook page. It immediately grabbed my interest for I am a shipper of the two Korean idols shown in the picture. I noticed that the origin of the image found in the article is not provided. The article contains advertisements that benefit the owner of the website.

5. Technical Quality
The size of the image is suited for its purpose. The photo has low quality, however the colors in the image are in harmony. Because of the darker theme, the photo gives off a cool, intimate and mature vibe for me.

It shows a compilation of videos that allegedly shows 'real aswang.'
Stickiness- Aswangs have long been part of our culture, even though we don't have concrete evidences that aswangs does exist, Filipinos are still fascinated into thinking that there aswangs do really exist and they use this kind of videos to prove and catch the attention of others to make them believe that aswang exists.

-----

Content Analysis- From the thumbnail of the video, it shows an image of aswang that is caught on cam. This image makes the viewers to watch the video to see if Aswangs really exist.
Visual Analysis- The image shows a creature that looks unusual and scary. This kind of image portrays how the aswang look like. It's also included in the image that there's a victim right beside the bloody body of the creature portraying that aswangs kill humans.
Contextual information- From the thumbnail up to the video itself, it contains information showing an evidence that aswangs exist. Even though there's already a video that aswangs are caught on camera, it doesn't have explanation as to whether the creature caught on camera is really an aswang or it's just edited or just made to fool the viewers. Clearly, this kind of content is targeted to make people especially Filipinos, to believe that aswangs exist. This furthermore is used to scare people.
Image Source- This kind of thumbnails can easily be seen on YouTube and other social media platforms. The source of this image or thumbnail is not reliable because the source of this content is not verified. It does also lack evidence and explanation.
Technical Quality- The thumbnail as well as the video itself has a low quality thus the image is somehow blurry. Some clips doesn't also provide clear image of the aswang and the overall video is composed of clips from different people who allegedly were able to capture the aswang.

The first image was used to promote the "Arat na Cebu" concert, which took place on March 26, 2022, however not all of the performers seen in the image will be present. Simply because of the backdrop colors, the message quickly drew the attention of BBM Supporters. It's fair to assume that the image was intended to clickbait them, and that the artists drew the attention of non-supporters. Fans of the musicians listed wants to see them perform. Furthermore, the fact that it is a free concert and the venue is conveniently accessible to everybody enticed people to attend. Days after announcing the concert, another picture showed up on Facebook which is the second picture. Many individuals were confused as to what was genuine or not, and who was actually performing or not. The artists in the second photo were among those who took part in the event. There were some who expressed their disappointment for other artists that they thought would go, however, because there were so many people at the performance, I believe the clickbait was effective.

…
EVALUATING MESSAGES

Simplicity- The information for the event is provided in both posters, and everything is contained in one poster. Except for the artists who are not present at the event, both designs are comparable and include the same information.

Specificity- It has an easy-to-understand design. There are no exaggerations, and the facts given may be understood at a glance.

Structure- The title and tagline are the sole parts of the poster's message. The performance information is neatly organized on the poster, making it appealing to the eye. It assists individuals in comprehending the event's when, where, and what. The event's purpose, however, was not disclosed. It's unclear if it has political motives or not.

Stickiness- The artist list alone is enough to attract someone to attend the event. It is aimed towards artists' admirers and music lovers, particularly those who would like to meet the artists in person. In fact, many on the internet were ecstatic about it and spread the poster all over Facebook. They could consider this as an opportunity to meet them, as free events like these are uncommon to come by. It intrigues and excites them.

…

EVALUATING IMAGES

Content and Visual analysis- The information presented is the event's specifics; however, it does not describe the program's flow, nor does it explain what the event's goal or importance is. I believe that once celebrities are involved, people are readily persuaded to go. There are several reasons why some people may misinterpret the poster. Others may see the image as a political ploy, while others may believe it is not. Others may go merely for the sake of meeting the artists, disregarding the cause for the event's existence. The faces of the artists are emphasized, while the names of minor artists are just stated on the poster. The faces alone is what makes the poster stand out and get the users attention.

Contextual information- Because of the green and red backdrop on the first poster, it appears to have a political motivation. This may tempt Marcos supporters to attend because of the color, and they may see the event as a political rally for their candidate of choice. The names of two local candidates are also featured at the bottom of the poster, which might signal that they support the candidate in question, however this is not true and the main purpose of the concert, according to the organizers of the event is to “to give Cebuanos a reason to celebrate after two years of collective fight to stand amid the pandemic and to rise from the devastating effect of Typhoon Odette that badly hit Cebu City in December last year.” Unlike the first image, the backdrop of the second poster, which is the official poster, clearly shows that it does not have any political implications; unlike the first image, the background is just consisting of a saturated smoke and light effect.

Image source and Technical quality- The posters are from Facebook. The elements of the photos are evenly distributed. Both are easy to understand for the audience. Because Facebook compresses picture quality, both photographs are of reasonable quality. Both posters are certainly the work of amateur editors. Both are easy to understand for the audience. The editor, on the other hand, does not receive sufficient recognition. It's also unclear who made the original post.

When surfing the Internet, one could find himself/herself in a void of repeatedly clicking on different titles, photos, and links that spark up our interest and curiosity, even by just a bit. The Internet is full of clickbaits, and whether we like it or not, we always fall victim to clickbaits all around the Internet.

EVALUATING MESSAGES

Simplicity: The thumbnail used in the video stimulates curiosity, most especially when paired with the title that directly states that something has been eaten to end up in this state. Both the thumbnail and title give such a vague warning that a viewer ends up clicking on it to know more about what must not be eaten. However, the title does not give the information that the video is only a movie summary.

Specificity: The diction or word choice is simple, understandable even at first reading, and used in a way to capture viewers' interests. Using "You" in the title as the first word makes it somewhat personal, thus, enticing a viewer to click on it even more. The video itself uses a casual tone, which makes it easy to finish without getting disinterested and confused.

Structure: The video is a decent movie summary. It is understandable, straight to the point, and narrated in such a way that does not bore the viewers. In addition to its viewer-friendly structure, the video is only less than 12 minutes long, which makes it easy for the viewers to consume and finish.

Stickiness: The movie summary is presented in a way that information is easy to remember. In this way, there is no need for the viewer to repeat a certain part of the video to understand it. The video flows in a coherent and cohesive manner. It is clear and, at the same time, entertaining.

EVALUATING IMAGES

Content Analysis: The thumbnail shows a girl whose face has red spots, somewhat like an infection of some sort. This peaks up the viewer's interest more as the picture would result to the viewer being concerned and curious on what not to eat to result in such.

Visual Analysis: The girl fills up most of the photo, as the background is blurry and can hardly be seen. We also see the screen wall in front of the girl, however, this does not block our vision of the girl and her infected face — the visual that lures the viewer into clicking the video.

Contextual Information: The information we know of the image is that the girl has eaten something that caused her face to be infected. This is a broad understanding of what the image is all about, based on the title. Without the title, it would even be broader as one could conclude that the infection happened because a hundred other reasons, but since the title states something about food and eating, it has narrowed down the viewer's possible conclusions.

Image Source: The thumbnail is presumed to be a shot from the movie. In other words, a spoiler.

Technical Quality: The image is not of the best quality, yet it is clear enough to see what is going on. Colors and lighting are used in an interestingly balanced manner that creates such a thrilling and gory feeling.

Evaluating Messages:

1. Simplicity
- The caption and the photo showed an actual extinct animal that looks alone could catch the attention of people.

2. Specificity
- The title of the video is direct and the photo shows an animal that most people aren't quite familiar.

3. Structure
- Because the video title is direct, people will become more curious as we are simple human beings that mostly like direct and simple things that will spark our curiosities naturally.

4. Stickiness
- It is a short video therefore it doesn't take a lot of the viewer's time. Especially how everyone is stuck in their homes nowadays, our interests, time spending are shifted once again. People who are interested in history, animals, or the marine life are most likely gonna click fast and watch the video.

Evaluating the Image

1. Content Analysis
- As shown on the cover photo of the video, the Livyatan Melvillei was supposedly spotted by an underwater camera. There was no further information as to where the video was from and where was the animal spotted but there was a video of it swimming towards the camera shortly after the reference picture was shown. A few would say it looks like the animal yet a lot also say that it was probably just a sperm whale.

2. Visual Analysis
- The video taken was dark and foggy. Truly show a raw underwater video. It was not clear if it was truly the Livyatan that was spotted. It sparked quite a controversy in the comment section.

3. Contextual Information
- The image shown and the video match the video title as the Livayatan has been extinct for a long period of time now. This doesn't only make the viewers wonder but because it lacks details, it is a good clickbait. People would think further details are in the video but by the end of it, no more details are provided. This video was made to garner views, likes, comments, and shares to earn money from people's natural curiosity.

4. Image Source
- The video didn't provide where the photo was taken from proving that not anything you see online are a reliable source of information.

5. Technical Quality
- The photo of the animal seemed to be a modified picture of the animal used as a possible reference in a history book or a history article. Since the video was obviously in a night mode to see better of the beauty of what's going on in the waters that we haven't fully explored and discovered. There wasn't any copyright restrictions shown.
