Born Mary Helen MacKillop on 15th January 1842 in Fitzroy (at the time it was part of an area called Newtown), New South Wales, Mary always wanted to help others. Mary grew up as the eldest of eight, her siblings were Margaret (1843-1872), John (1845-1867), Annie (1848-1929), Alexandria (1850-1882), Donald (1853-1925), Alick (died at 11 months of age) and Peter (1857-1878). She attened various private schools and was also homeschooled by her father Alexander MacKillop.

Mary started work at the age of 14 as a governess at the estate of her aunt and uncle the L’Estranges. She was teaching her students how to be “ladies”: not just reading, writing and arithmetic but also deportment, manners, sketching and music. Mary loved the job, one of the reasons is because they had a big library. She was keen to educate herself and become a teacher.

In 1960 her family went into debt meaning Mary had to leave L’Estranges and get a better paying job. She found one in a factory shop called Sands, Keeny and Co., a printer in Melbourne. They printed stationery, maps and account books. She hated the job but was good at it so she was promoted to foreman. Her experience in the factory showed her how important the working class people are and the kind of education she set up later in life.

Her brother got a job as a carpenter's apprentice on the railways meaning the Mary could quit her job and take up the offer of governess to her cousins the MacDonald children in Penola, South Australia.

When Mary was a bit older she made friends with an Aboriginal woman named Nancy and taught her to read and write and she got a job for her in the city. Mary realised how little education people in the country had and she met Father Julian Tension Woods and convinced her to set up an order of nuns rather than joining a pre-existing one to bring education to the children. Mary didn’t know that it would be 5 years before she did that.

In 1865, Mary was determined to become a nun but her mother didn’t want her to. The family was in debt and needed Mary’s income to support it. Soon after, Father Woods wrote to Mary telling her that the only school in Penola was closing down and if she joined he would pay all of Mary’s family debt. Mary agreed to it and thus started her missionary work.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus.[a] “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” 27 He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”

29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance, a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii,[b] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

WORLD OF THE TEXT
What is the basic storyline? A man was robbed and beaten. Some walk by and don’t help him. A good Samaritan is also walking down the road and sees the hurt man and decides to help him out.
Where does the story take place? Jerusalem.
When does the story take place? More than 2000 years ago.
Why might the author have written this story? To show how Jesus got others thinking about helping those in need.
Words I need to find meanings for. Denarii - an Ancient Roman silver coin.
Who are the main characters in the story? The man who was beaten up, The good Samaritan, The innkeeper, The people who walked by and did nothing
What do we know about them? The man was innocent, the Samaritan was a good man who just wanted to help, the innkeeper owns an inn, they walked by and didn't care.
What do we need to find out? Why the people who did nothing did nothing
What did the author want people to know about Jesus or about God? Jesus is about helping others in need.

WORLD BEHIND THE TEXT

Where was it set? What was the place/landscape like in the time parable was written? It was set in Jerusalem on the road to Jericho also known as “The Way of Blood”. The landscape was arid and dry.
What was happening at this time in history in the community for which it was written? Jews hated Samaritans so much.
What did we find out about these characters and who they were in the time written? Samaritans were hated by Jews. In Jewish culture, it is disgusting to touch a dead body. It meant uncleanliness. They may have thought the man was dead to avoid uncleanliness.
What other information about the time it was written is important? I.e. rules/laws, religious roles and rituals. In Jewish culture, it is disgusting to touch a dead body. It meant uncleanliness.
How does all this background information provide a deeper meaning and message? It shows a deeper meaning because now there is a reason why the priest and Levite didn’t stop to help the man in need.

WORLD IN FRONT OF THE TEXT

Why now, do you think the author wrote this story? To show that Jesus is a thinker and gets others to think like him and see that they should help others in need.
What message does this story have for us today? It has the message of kindness, to help others where you can.
Who are examples of the “main character” in our society today? Those who donate to charity. and the organisation called Caritas.
What do they do to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and in inspiring human dignity and human rights? They donate money and item to help those who need it. Caritas teach and give shelter to those who need it.
Who would a target audience be TODAY for this text and WHY? Teens of today to not be ashamed of helping.
How and WHY do you think this miracle story/parable may have inspired your reformer? I think Mary was inspired because she was all about helping others and putting their needs before herself.

In Rerum Noverum the pope of the time talks about wages, work hours and the common good. Part 34 and 37 of the document may have inspired Mary MacKillop as it talks about the Common Good and protection for the poor. Mary cares about the common good no matter who they are. It talks about the working class and the need for them to be protected as well as the poor as they are the most vulnerable.

Without knowing it Caritas is has followed in Mary’s footsteps. Mary provided for the poor and so does Caritas. Mary taught others who couldn’t afford school or didn’t have access to a school and does Caritas. Caritas wants a fair world of peace and freedom and no poverty. Where everyone has a chance and dignity, this is also what Mary wanted. They are priestly as they sacrifice there time to help those in need. They are prophetic as they speak out against poverty. They are kingly as they promote loving each other as neighbours.
