The “What Ifs” That Shaped My Values

One year ago, in Grade 9, I created a video for our Values Education class about something that had always made me uneasy: choosing a career. At the time, I dreaded the topic. Every time someone asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I felt like I was being asked to decide the rest of my life. I filled my video with “what ifs”—What if I regret my choice? What if I fail? What if my future self wishes I had tried harder? It was meant to be creative, but in truth, it reflected my own confusion and fear of the unknown.

As I made that video, I realized I wasn’t just talking about jobs—I was talking about values. Each “what if” revealed how much I wanted to live meaningfully, not just successfully. I saw that my anxiety came from treating the future like a race I had to win, rather than a journey to understand myself. The belief that was challenged was my idea that one wrong decision could ruin my life. Through reflection, I began to see that no single path defines us; instead, it’s our values—our compassion, perseverance, curiosity, and integrity—that guide us no matter which direction we take.

The conflict was between societal expectations and personal authenticity. On one side, there was the pressure to “start early” and “choose wisely,” as people always say. On the other, there was my growing belief that fulfillment doesn’t come from following a perfect plan—it comes from staying true to one’s principles even when the path is uncertain. I reasoned that rushing toward success without aligning with my values would only lead to exhaustion and emptiness. I began to accept that purpose doesn’t always arrive early, and that it’s okay to take time to discover who I am and what I want to contribute to the world.

Looking back now as a Grade 11 student, that video still echoes in my mind. I’m no longer as afraid of the future as I used to be. I’ve realized that no matter what career I choose—whether I become a diplomat, a journalist, or something entirely different—what matters most is that I live a life rooted in honesty, empathy, and service. My worldview has grown more holistic: I see life not as a series of rigid milestones, but as an ongoing dialogue between self, others, and the world.

This experience taught me that the future is not something to fear—it’s something to shape with our values. Every choice becomes meaningful when it aligns with who we are and what we stand for. The “what ifs” will always be there, but now I see them not as doubts, but as invitations to reflect, to grow, and to live with purpose.
