In the tragedy Hamlet, Hamlet is conflicted as to whether the ghost was really his father or not based upon his religion. This delays his course of action to kill Claudius and puts him in a never-ending circle of distress. In addition, he struggles with his emotions towards Ophelia and his mother. He loves them both but despises his mother because she married her husband's brother and is disgusted by Ophelia's behavior. Overall, these factors cause Hamlet to delay his course of action and ultimately leads to continuous external conflicts between the other characters.

Hamlet also is does not know whether to believe that the ghost of his father was a blessing or demon. The famous line "To be or not to be" comes from his inner conflict of whether or not he wants to live or die. The conflict within himself that Hamlet has causes pain in himself and others.

Throughout Hamlet, William Shakespeare reveals the theme that indecision and uncertainty can cause catastrophic damage, through the use of Hamlet's struggle with choices he must make including suicide and the way he will kill his uncle.
In the play, Hamlet compares death to sleep, saying that it is a way to escape the problems that he is facing. This shows that he is considering suicide so that he does not have to deal with his problems anymore. Later, he also struggles with the thought that by committing suicide, he would ruin his chances of going to heaven because suicide was considered a sin.
Another problem Hamlet struggles with is the way he will plan to kill his uncle. One method Hamlet was going to use was to kill him while he was in his room praying. However, Hamlet decided against this method because he did not want his uncle to go to heaven if he was killed while praying. Hamlet also tried to kill his uncle by stabbing through a tapestry in his mother's bedroom when he saw movement behind it. By doing this, he accidentally stabbed Polonius, who was hiding behind the tapestry. This shows that rash thinking, and the indecision and uncertainty that led to it, would cause problems for multiple people.

The definition of madness can be defined as the state of being mentally ill," and significant to ¨Hamlet¨ because it´s used by Hamlet to avenge his father and is the main cause of the kingdom of Denmark´s fall.

- The madness has caused Hamlet to become more indecisive, for example when he asks himself, ¨To be or not to be, that is the question,¨ which is basically asking himself if he´d rather be alive or dead. It has also caused him to be viewed very differently by other characters. With this madness, it´s caused a domino affect of death and more madness, like with Ophelia going mad and crazy, eventually leading to her death, as well as the death of Polonius that caused the duel that ended everyone in the kingdom.

Shakespeare's "Hamlet" reveals that madness has the ability to go undiscovered, manifest and deceive its host, and cause an untimely demise. Essentially throughout the story Hamlet is already mentally delusional even though no one seems to recognize it besides Polonius. Hamlet internally denies that the fact that he is mad and attempts to portray his madness as an act rather than his current state of being. Which ties to all of his secondary fatal flaws such as his indecisiveness, they all come from that fact that his feels are too overbearing and that he is mentally overwhelmed.

With this indecisiveness the story is moved into more intense situations than an immediate solution would bring. This proves how much Hamlet's internal conflict prolongs his demise.

Hamlet's apparent madness was reasonable because it was this apparent madness that allowed the avenging of King Hamlet's death. This has played an important role in the play, because part of Ophelia's madness is due to Hamlets, and had Ophelia never become mad, then she may have never died. This would have impacted the play, because it was this death that lead to the duel between Laertes and Hamlet which ended in the death of Hamlet, Laertes, King Claudius, and Queen Gertrude.

This can be seen by how Claudius takes so long in sending Hamlet to England to die; his hesitation could be attributed to the fact that Claudius may be guilty over killing Hamlet's father. This can again be seen when Claudius is praying and asking for repentance. Since Claudius is being so hesitant, this leads to him planning a rigged duel in order to kill Hamlet once and for all. However, not only does this lead to his own death, but the duel results in the death of almost everyone in the royal family.
