Substance use support and interventions are important to me because they directly impact the individuals that we, as nurses, will come across. As a nursing student, I recognize the critical role healthcare professionals play in providing compassionate, evidence-based care to those struggling with substance use. Understanding and advocating for comprehensive support systems can help improve health outcomes and empower individuals on their recovery journey.

This is my original artwork, created to represent a state of improved mental well-being. Art therapy provides individuals with a non-verbal outlet to address both mental health disorders and substance use challenges (Doku et al., 2024). Substance use often stems from underlying mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or past trauma. Traditional treatments, while effective, may not always address the emotional and psychological wounds that contribute to addiction. Art therapy offers an alternative approach by allowing individuals to explore their emotions, identify triggers, and develop self-awareness through creative expression (Doku et al., 2024).

As a nursing student, evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential to me because it ensures that the care I provide is grounded in the most current, reliable research. EBP enhances patient safety, improves outcomes, and supports clinical decision-making by integrating scientific evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences. By utilizing EBP, I can develop critical thinking skills, stay informed about advancements in healthcare, and contribute to high-quality, patient-centred care.

This is an extremely powerful video that I came across some time ago. It is a persuasive representation of the internal struggle, mental health challenges, and the difficulty of consistent substance misuse. Many individuals turn to substance use as a coping mechanism for deeper emotional pain, and without proper support, they may feel trapped in this continuous cycle of self-destruction (Hudson et al., 2018). The video's message reinforces the need for open conversations about mental health and accessible resources for those in crisis.

Understanding the benefits of breastfeeding allows me to support and educate new parents on best practices and promote informed decision-making. During my placement at PRHC, I had the opportunity to work with patients experiencing a wide range of mental health challenges. This experience allowed me to apply research-backed interventions, such as therapeutic communication techniques to provide more effective care (Nurse Tracy, 2023). By integrating current research with clinical practice, I was able to contribute to positive outcomes while enhancing my understanding of how evidence-based practice shapes nursing interventions in mental health settings (Nurse Tracy, 2023).

The Epic charting system is an electronic health record platform widely used in healthcare settings to document patient information, track clinical data, and streamline communication among healthcare teams (Samee, 2025). I chose this artifact because it plays a crucial role in supporting evidence-based practice (EBP) in multiple ways. It provides clinicians with direct access to the latest clinical guidelines, research findings, and decision-support tools, allowing them to make informed treatment decisions based on the most up-to-date evidence (Samee, 2025). Epic enhances the application of EBP by integrating evidence into everyday clinical practice, ultimately contributing to safer and more effective healthcare delivery.

Understanding breastfeeding positions is essential for providing effective support to new mothers and ensuring successful feeding (Mayo Clinic, 2025). Proper positioning helps promote a good latch, which reduces nipple pain, prevents issues like clogged ducts or mastitis, and ensures adequate milk transfer for the infant's nutrition (Mayo Clinic, 2025). Knowing different positions such as the cradle hold, football hold, and side-lying position allows me to tailor my guidance based on the mother's comfort, the baby's needs, and any specific medical considerations (e.g., C-section recovery) (Mayo Clinic, 2025). This image serves as a valuable educational tool to help determine alternative ways to help mothers breastfeed.

Breastfeeding Quote

I chose this quote as it beautifully captures the multifaceted benefits of breastfeeding. It emphasizes not only the physical and emotional health benefits for the baby but also the positive impact on the mother and the environment. Breastfeeding fosters a deep bond between mother and child, providing essential nutrients and immune protection (Government of Canada, 2024). For the mother, it can support emotional well-being and can even protect mothers from many diseases, such as breast and ovarian cancer (Government of Canada, 2024). Additionally, breastfeeding reduces the need for formula, making it a more sustainable choice for the environment (Government of Canada, 2024). This quote captures the holistic and long-term advantages that make breastfeeding a valuable practice, and as a nursing student, I find it motivating to support and educate families about these benefits.

Practicing mindfulness is important to me because it helps me stay present and grounded, especially in high-stress situations like nursing school and clinical practice. It allows me to manage stress, improve focus, and enhance my ability to provide compassionate care to patients. Mindfulness also supports my emotional well-being by helping me process challenges with a clear and calm mindset. By incorporating mindfulness into my daily routine, I can strengthen my resilience and lower the chances of potential burnout.

This is a picture I took from a walk I went out. Spending time outdoors and going for a walk is a powerful way to practice mindfulness. The fresh air, and natural surroundings help ground me in the present moment, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm (Ontario Parks, 2024). As a nursing student, integrating mindfulness through outdoor walks helps me manage academic and clinical stress while improving my overall well-being. It's a simple yet effective way to reset, reflect, and cultivate a more balanced mindset, which ultimately benefits my personal growth (Ontario Parks, 2024).

Meditation has always been an effective and easy way that I like to practice mindfulness. In times of stress, I frequently like to set aside a few minutes to just breathe and focus on the present moment. This video offers a short but powerful meditation session that promotes a sense of calm in oneself. Mediation works by directing your awareness to your breath, your thoughts, the physical sensations in your body, and the feelings you are experiencing (American Psychological Association, 2019). Helping to relieve stress and improve well-being
