When I was a child and used to live in India my friend used to call me Kashi whereas my real name was kashish. The word Kashi bothered me because in my native language Hindi Kashi is meant undies. I used to feel embarrassed about my name and used to ask my grandparent and parents to change my name. Jacobson (2008) talked about how in Taxes one of the teachers used to call children "pumpkin" and by other pet names until one day when one four-year-old object and asked her to call by his real name.
This made me think that if I don't stand for myself no one will support me.
Kashish

In my country culture, most of parents name to their children a name at home which is different from real children's name. Most of those names are cute, petite and depending on individual's personality. I have my own home name too, it's "Misa" and I ask my parents why is "Misa", my parents said Misa is a cute teddy bear from Russia and that teddy bear is a symbol for Olympic in the year I was born. I don't know about others' origin but I heard some names in my own language relate to small pet (kitty), fruit, veggetable, characteristic (tiny), and English name too. I asked them the reason and the parents say it simply sounds close as a family, cute as a child, easier for grandparents to call, the child's favourite food or it just less formal. In my opinion about Eastern side, I think it's normal and create a sense of belonging, closeness and intimacy. I'm a bit of surprise when I just came to Western, teachers always say "correct me if I say your name wrong". In the aspect of Western side, I feel like people really serious about their real name and even how to pronounce it true. So I feel like a mix between it, I just adapt depends on who I communicate with. I still respect other's real name while feeling closeness when someone call me my home name.
Minh Bui.

Name does matter

I feel more comfortable when people address me with my real name. My family and friends normally call me "Cheuk Ki" or "Kiki" and I can feel that I am connected with them and have a close relationship with them as well. However, my mother-in-law calls me with a different name which I find it quite offensive although she does not think so. The name is actually describing my physical appearance. In fact, I feel very disrespectful and embarrassing if she uses this name to call me in front of other people. So, I can imagine how a child feels when they are being called with a name that they do not like. This can affect a child's self esteem and we have to be mindful in this matter.
Cheuk
