In coastal areas tomatoes and bananas are cultivated, which are exported to Europe. At lower, drier altitudes potatoes, tobacco and maize are most commonly grown. Grapes are grown in the steep north-facing slopes and onions in the south. Flowers are also produced. The island is an important fishing ground for Spain.
