Access to the Dye Lab, Digital Textile Lab & Technical support

The Dye Lab works on a sign up basis. We still use manual booking systems (which will be located on the wall outside the room). This also has sign up for Silkscreen cleaning, coating and exposing slots also.

For use of the Large format paper printer, please email your artwork to wimbledondyeroom@wimbledon.arts.ac.uk

We accept artworks in jpeg and pdf. All files must at least in 300dpi. Images should be print ready, meaning to the size you want (ready for the size of the silkscreen you have cleaned, ready for coating and exposing).

The Fabric digital printer is currently being used in specific units. If you require the printer service outside of these times, please discuss with Jenny, Izzy or Lara.

Digitising and use of the embroidery machines are to take place with technical support on Wednesday - Friday. You must have attended an embroidery intro session before accessing the computers that are specifically for digitising of artwork on Wilcom, the software used for embroidery machines.

Resources Intro - Dye Lab (Room 101) & Exposing/Wash Out Room (101A)

Within the Dye Lab there are 2 Textile print tables, various sized dye vats, Induction sampling hob, washing machine, steamer, spinner and the drying cabinets and silkscreen racking.

The Exposing room and wash out room are joined with this room. This is where you will prepare your silkscreen (wash, coat & expose). There is a drying cabinet located in this room for drying freshly coated and washed silkscreens. This cabinet will fit the large silkscreens.

The Technicians in this space can advise you with processes such as Silkscreen printing for Textiles, Dyeing and Breakdown/Distressing & Enhancing.

All students must attend an Induction session before using the workshop. Once inducted you may book your slot via the physical sign up sheet located on the wall outside the Dye Lab.

Silkscreen printing Inductions run separately from the Dye Lab general induction. We will advertise these accordingly and termly.

You may also access domestic equipment such as glue guns, irons, hairdryers and heat guns also.

Resources Intro - Digital Textiles Lab (Room 117) & Digital Embroidery Lab (Room 116)

This room has been created to facilitate the Mimaki Fabric Printer, the large format printer for paper, Digital Embroidery Machines (3 in total) and millinery.

In this room we have a 2.5 metre print table used for millinery and breakdown/hand painting processes. You will find millinery head blocks, hat steamer, heat press and sewing machines (for millinery) in this room.

The Large Format Printer is used for paper, printing up to 914mm wide and we print only on to a thin white paper and tracing paper. This is mainly used for printing artwork for silkscreen printing.

The Mimaki is used on a 1:1 basis and is currently being used within specific units for BA and MA Costume students. However if you would like to use this for your coursework and are on a different course, please do chat with us to discuss your requirements.

We currently only have three stock fabrics in store for the Mimaki, but we are able to print onto uncoated fabrics, purchased elsewhere, but tests need to be carried out. You will need to allow 1-1.5 metres for testing if you are bringing in your own fabric. We do not print onto plastics, stretch and some polyester.

Digital Embroidery Room - Room B116

There are computers located in this room for teaching and checking artwork for the printers. There are two pc's in the Embroidery room that are designated for digitising artwork for the embroidery software.

The Digital Textile Lab and Digital Embroidery Lab are bookable spaces. These will be closed to students for teaching sessions throughout the year.

The Digital Textile Lab is subject to being closed if there are taught workshops taking place in the Dye Lab.
