Describe the organization. What does it do? How is it connected to the issue? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) believes that under the Constitution all children should be given equal educational opportunity regardless of their race, ethnic background, religion, sex, amount of money they have, or whether they are a citizen or non-citizen. The ACLU is fighting to make sure this right to free public education for everyone is not taken away. The ACLU works to defend people's individual educational rights through working in the legislatures, courts, and even communities.

Describe programs and/or initiatives that it has to address the issue. One program that the ACLU has is called the ACLU National Advocacy Institute College and Community Program. This program helps prepare college-aged individuals (ages 18-24) about what it means to be a social justice advocate by teaching them grassroots organizing, policy development, and legal advocacy. Another program the ACLU has is called the ACLU National Advocacy Institute’s High School Program. This program brings together U.S. high school students (ages 15-18) to partake in a week of learning how and what it means to be a social justice advocate.

Describe partner organizations that it works with. The ACLU works with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The ACLU first started working with the NAACP in 1954 to fight against racial segregation in public schools. Interestingly, they joined forces in court for the famous Brown v. Board of Education case that ended “separate but equal” laws.

Word Count: 219

Identify the authors of the article and the newspaper: The New York Times, by Eliza Shapiro

State the main ideas of the article: In New York for the past couple of decades, the only way to get into the top and most elite schools is through a single standardized test. Standardized tests are easier to do well on if you have the money to buy prep books, attend special classes, or hire a tutor. These are all things lower-class families cannot afford which sets up an unfair system.

Identify the most important details that support the main ideas: This year, only ten Black students out of 760 total freshman students got into New York City’s most selective public high school, Stuyvesant. Only 20 Hispanic students got in.

Word count: 127

Describe the organization what does it do? how is it connected to the issue? The Steppingstone Foundation (TSF) The National Partnership for Educational Access fights for educational access for underserved students around the United States. The Through the NPEA underserved students get the opportunity to go to a good college and succeed wherever their education takes them. One of their goals is to hopefully one day insure every student can have access to high quality education with equal opportunities during and after their education.

Describe programs and/or initiatives that it has to address the issue. One program TSF has is called College Success Academy (CSA). This initiative works allows students to take part in a college readiness program which prepares students k-8 to take part in a program which will help them stay on task for college education. The next program TSF has is Steppingstones Academy which prepares middle grade underrepresented students for successful admissions to top colleges but also, give students constant support to make sure they succeed in highschool and then a 4 year college.

Describe partner organizations that it works with. The TSF has two affiliate organizations the first one is the Steppingstone academy Hartford founded in 2005. This organization works towards improving college access to Hartford children. The second affiliate to the TSF is Steppingstones Scholars Inc located in Philadelphia. which prepares students for acceptance and success at top colleges, through after school and summer programs designed to help students succeed.

Word Count:246

Identify the authors of the article and the newspaper: Chicago tribune, Christen A. Johnson

State the main ideas of the article: Lack of good education tends to connect to homelessness. A group of people began a place called Phoenix Hall where homeless students can move into a hall where they can stay for the transition of finding a safe place to stay with meals and places to do homework. In Phoenix Hall you also receive support from staff with help with their education to make sure they stay on the path to success. The area of Lawndale has many homeless students so Phoenix Hall is a important part of the community for these less privileged kids.

Identify the most important details that support the main ideas: Family instability and socioeconomic problems early on lead to housing instability and lower educational attainment.

Word count: 162
