The purpose

I made this project a Wolf head because it’s what I have been told represents me. Growing up with bullying and harassment for things I can’t change, I had the nickname “dog” because of my apparent loyalty and how I can easily be tricked, I first imagined this to be heavily based off depression, depicting the wolf drowning. Yet throughout this I slowly realized I don’t know how to explain this depression, other then the word “trapped” there isn’t an object to define it. Then, the base broke, I was quite devastated from this, I felt like everything I was working on was crumbling at my hands. Eventually, I learned that that mistake was a happy accident, I guess no matter what it leads here with a finished project. So, now I depict it breaking thought this wall, getting out of this invisible barrier but even still, I can’t forget that the vines of depression can bring me back under at any moment, so I have to be careful not to be pricked. I had wanted the eyes originally to be more wolf-like but now I mixed it a bit and have one of them bugging out to signify how I feel, I feel odd, different. I had also wanted the teeth to trail off the face and mix with the cheek for this added effect of disfigurement. The paw reaching out to whatever it can grab onto, outstretched and dangerous from how sharp it is. I also have the maw slightly distorted from this invisible hand. Something invisible but still felt. That was my message, I wanted that pain and disfigurement and difference to stand out more then the rest of the piece.

This whole time I’m working on the skull I’m working on a personal project, something for a friends birthday, AND A LIFE SIZED crocodile, working on the head of it first. While I neglected the skull project.

The first three times I failed making the bottom jaw, i was trying to make it a separate thing and tried to perfectly make it the right size of the skull in front of me.

I tried to match it and size it just under the size of this jaw from the skeleton in the room, using it as a reference to make the jaw. Another problem I faced was this drying out either not enough or too much, it’s easy to wrap up tightly but difficult to dry as the part I want to merge dries first since it’s the thinnest, so I tried eventually to copy what another student did..

This previous student had merged the jaw at the back and not on the ball joint thingy at the top, I tried to replicate this but the sizing of it never worked, it was always too small or too frail or I just didn’t like how it connected and removed it.

I had thoroughly given up on the bottom jaw, but that didn’t mean the thing should be scrapped or blown up in the kiln, so I did a lobotomy on the poor sucker.

With how I made part of the skull, building volume up with sheets of clay it made weird layers that dried up inside, so while hollowing it out, I had to make sure that the top of the skull was just thin enough and had no air inside. This picture shows how the skull dried weirdly and unevenly because of this, causing the process to be..messy..with getting the top of the skull off.

So here’s what happened…

I had broken the skull in half basically, used the sides of the skull to add a three pronged base that it’ll stand on, I turned the nose into a type of finger/just made it longer to be more (in my own words) more Jewish and I added spikes on it and smoothed it and cleaned it all up, merging pieces of the skull together. I don’t think I used a lot if any clay from my bag from this, all the clay I needed was inside the skull.

This was what really made me want to do this. All these different styles on the back of the same species of lizard is really cool and in the game that these guys are from, they all have different personalities and strengths/weaknesses. I love this Eel back but I wanted almost a ‘turtle’ aspect on the lizard as a protective shell because they’re insanely tanky in the game and it’s like trying to break open a crab at a restaurant

Guts

I added it spilling its guts but trying to hold it all in like me :)

Mostly this is supposed to convey the emotion/word of “wrongness”, I want it to be unrecognizable as to what creature it is, I want it’s limbs to be wrong.

The old head of the beast

Before I had this semi-cool head on it but once I realized “oh! It has to be hollow!” I found my biggest issue, small narrow spaces that are around curves I can’t get to.

The issue

The mouth, the gaping maw I wanted it to have where it curves into itself and coils was so narrow and barely supported, but too thick to leave alone. So I eventually scrapped the head

This time it’s more of a lizard head with the scales. I actually really liked this and it fitted well on the actual piece

Aalllsooo turtle shell back thing, originally I wanted all distinct spikes but then I disliked that and used the form of a turtles shell to make this strange valley-shaped shell

It WOUDVE been a chicken leg that would carry the full weight of the other piece but I got distracted and made it a sort of finger with bumps on it
