Who (specifically, generally, logically) wrote/produced the doc?
- Benjamin Dale created this picture for the program.
- However, if we are to guess then maybe we would like it was a woman created this image.
Is there a reference to the author’s POV (i.e. his/her professional, racial, gender, social background) in the document biline? If not, can you infer it?
- There is no bi-line for this image.
- We can assume that this person was a champion of votes for women. The artist draws women as heroic.
What details in the document reflect the author’s POV?
- The artist draws a woman leading a procession of other woman into DC. The women are carrying flags and wearing sashes that indicate support for votes for women. The rider is announcing the arrival of the procession heralding in the crowd.

Why was the document created?
- The document was created to highlight the processional of people in the Women's Suffrage March. Announcing the parade to the people of DC.
What elements in the document help you to determine its purpose?
- The word procession is seen on the image. Plus the women are marching.
How does the author’s point of view shape the document’s purpose AND/OR How does the format of the document shape its purpose? (e.g. Is a visual/photo more emotional than an essay?)
- The artist believe the women to be heroes in the cause for women's suffrage. This is shown by their use of imagery of flowing clothes and the trumpet announcing their arrival.
- The picture conveys emotions of pride that a printed handout would not have accomplished.

Y is the Document Important?

How does the document impact/shape/reflect popular arguments on the subject?
- This document shows women as vital members in the Progressive Era. In this image women are leading the charge for themselves but many women were also champions of other reforms taking place during this time.
How does the document reflect ‘continuity or change over time’ (C-COT)?
- Women once again find themselves being champions for their own cause. Prior to the Civil War women began their fight for suffrage but had to put a pause on their cause because of the Civil War. Women during this Era did not know of the coming World War but would once again have to make the decision to step back or continue to move forward with their cause. Since the women in this movement were younger it is safe to assume that they would not step down but continue on. They will continue to protest during the Great War and will receive a national suffrage amendment at the end of the war thanks to their efforts.
What are the limitations of the document? (Is the document credible?)
- This document is just an image it does not actually inform what the women were thinking at this time.

Evaluate the effectiveness of Progressive Era Reformers and the federal government in bringing about reform at the national level. In your answer be sure to analyze the successes and limitations of these efforts in the period 1900-1920.

Women found their most national success with the 19th Amendment. Groups like NAWSA and NWA worked to get women the right to vote first with the state to state approach and then the national amendment. Women brought their reform to national attention with the Parade in Washington, DC. Women were leading the fight for their cause themselves and were using the platform of the parade to bring national attention to the the suffrage movement. The artist, Benjamin Dale, thought these women were champions for the cause of suffrage. He draws them as though they are champions coming into the jousting arena. Although women worked together for their cause not all women were represented equally for example African American women. They are not even represented in the image but African American women did attend the parade in a segregated section in the back of the parade.
