As you may (or may not) have heard, there's been talk about Salt Lake City taking over Sorenson Multicultural and Unity Fitness Center sometime this year. At this time, the information that we have is VERY limited, but here are a few things we do know:

• The buildings and land are owned by Salt Lake City Corporation, while SL County only operates SMCC and the fitness room.
• Salt Lake City approached Salt Lake County administration several weeks ago to talk about a transition back to City-operated centers. 
• Salt Lake City appears to be in the process of either creating a proposal or they have already created a proposal and will present it to the City Council in March or April.
• If the public asks you about this, you are permitted  to refer them to Salt Lake City offices and this district's council member (information below).
• We ask that all communications by all employees be made in a professional, ethical, and courteous manner. That said, a number of us are very passionate about continuing to serve our community, and we've made this very clear to SL County administration. We are doing our best to educate ourselves and the community members we serve in a way that does not harm the reputation and partnership between the City and the County.
• Community members who would like more information or would like to make a comment are to contact District 2 Council Member Andrew Johnston at 801-535-7781 or andrew.johnston@slcgov.com.
• Above all, community comes first and foremost. Continue to serve those who make this center what it is today.
• If you have any questions, I urge you to come talk to me or other merit staff.
