A geographic information system (GIS) is a type of database that includes descriptions of phenomena for which location is important as well as software tools for organizing, analyzing, and displaying data. A system like this may be thought of in a larger sense to include human users and support personnel, processes and workflows, a body of knowledge of pertinent ideas and methodologies, and institutional organisations. ArcGIS is a modern version of software that may be used to process GIS data. ArcGIS is a geographical information system (GIS) tool that makes it possible to process and analyze geographic data by layer-building maps and displaying geographic statistics such as trade movements or climate data. Geographic information is information that can be associated with a place name, a street address, section, a zip code or coordinate of latitude and longitude.

INTRODUCTION TO ARCGIS

Perform basic GIS operations before starting any GIS project such as setting up the workspace, adding the data, convert and project the data. At the end of this lab exercise, should be able to:

1. Set-up ArcGIS interface suitable for your needs

2. Perform basic data adding to ArcGIS

3. Perform data conversion and projection.

7. Connect to Folder in Catalog Pane

8. Add feature class (.shp) Data from Catalog Pane

9. Add table (.txt) data and convert it to feature class

10. Add data from Google Earth (.kmz) and convert it to Shapefile (Feature Class)

11. Projecting data with different projection system

12. Add basemap from ArcGIS Online

13. Add data from ArcGIS Online

14. Symbolize and label the data

15. Create and export map
