         <title>Phonemic Awareness</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Have an ending sound on a card and a beginning sound on another card. Switch out beginning sounds to make new words.</p></li><li><p>Give students a word and ask them what the beginning, middle, and ending sound is.</p></li></ol><p>*Each of these activities can be differentiated by creating shorter words for those struggling and harder/longer words for those who are getting the hang of it.</p><p><br></p><p>At Home Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Parents read at home with their child and randomly pick a word in a story and ask the child what the word would be with a different beginning/middle/ending sound. This will encourage student understanding that sounds in words can be changed and manipulated to make new words. This will help with reading fluency and allow children to easily change different sounds as they read to be more smooth and fluent readers. </p></li><li><p>My Big World Scholastic Website has tons of great resources for helping with reading skills including phonemic awareness. Practicing phonemic awareness online can make learning more fun and exciting for kids and encourage them to get better at certain skills.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Use letter flashcards to have students practice different sounds. Special sounds can also be practiced this same way for 1st-3rd. </p></li><li><p>Fly swatter sound match is a fun way for kids to use a fly swatter to turn around and try to find the sound before their opponent. </p></li></ol><p>*Both of these activities can be differentiated by giving students more time who are struggling to remember sounds and by giving them an opponent in the game that is on the same level as them to ensure a fair game. </p><p><br></p><p>At Home Activities: </p><ol><li><p>While children are brushing their teeth they can practice their letter sounds and special sounds. This will help with letter sound retention and allow for speedier reading during school. The better students are at recognizing letters and their sounds in reading the more fluent they will be. </p><p><br></p></li><li><p><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://Splashlearn.com">Splashlearn.com</a> is a fun and engaging website to help kids with their phonics and math skills.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Play vocabulary word/definition matching. Students have to draw a line on the white board to match the new vocabulary word with its definition.</p></li><li><p>Students have to say the new vocabulary words in a silly voice to help with definition retention. </p></li></ol><p>*Both of these vocabulary games would probably not need to be differentiated and would be easy for anyone. </p><p><br></p><p>At Home Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Students can copy their new vocabulary words at home with their parents checking to make sure it is correct. This is a basic way of getting practice of new words. This will increase reading comprehension skills as well so students will have a better understanding of what they are reading. </p></li><li><p>Flocabulary provides many fun games to help with student's vocabulary skills. These games can be played at home to build at home relationships and get kids practicing their new vocabulary words.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Speed reading is a great way to help kids with their reading fluency and making sure speed is there. </p></li><li><p>Special sound/sound matching cards will help with fluency and students will be able to quickly recognize what letters make what sounds and will help with more fluent reading. </p></li></ol><p>*Differentiation can be applied by choosing appropriately skilled reading passages for each child. The matching game would not need to be differentiated. </p><p><br></p><p>At Home Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Reading every night with the child is a great way to practice fluency. This will make the school day go smoother because the child is getting reading practice at home and in school. Fluency comes with time and the more practice the better it will get. </p></li><li><p><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://Enrichingyoungmindsandhearts.com">Enrichingyoungmindsandhearts.com</a> has a lot of awesome games and activities to help families with fluency at home.          <description><![CDATA[<p><br></p><p>Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Students will read a story and answer the comprehension questions throughout the story.</p></li><li><p>Students will do a sequencing chart to work on comprehension.</p></li></ol><p>*Lower skilled readers will have easier passages.</p><p><br></p><p>At Home Activities:</p><ol><li><p>Parents can come up with questions of their own for stories at home. Comprehension is so important because eventually students will be learning from reading articles and things like that once they get into 2nd and 3rd grade and on. Understanding the reading will help with knowledge retention for the upper grades.</p></li><li><p>IXL learning has a website to help with comprehension. This is a very beneficial site to get work in online and make the learning fun.
