One of the key themes of this film is the horrific treatment of the Indian people living under the British empire rule. This is portrayed early on in the movie when Gandhi is thrown out of a train for sitting in first class despite paying for a first class ticket.

In the Film "Gandhi," the main ideas are the road to social justice and independence in India by promoting civil liberties, ending discrimination for racial, sexual, or religious reasons by peaceful means. The politics of the British Empire and the Local Indian officials focused on the oppression of India's people and was the cause of all issues in India. Instead, Gandhi promoted a new form of politics based on spiritual wealth and sacrifice, as well as a connection to people's true needs, regardless of their wealth, religion, or gender.

Later in the film, the Amritsar massacre, one of the worst massacres in Indian history, is portrayed. Acting brigadier general, Reginald Dyer, ordered his troops in the British Indian army to open fire on a group of peaceful unarmed Indian protesters, including men, women, and children. The casualties are still disputed to this day, but it is estimated that over 1500 people were killed and 3-4 times that number were injured.

Another key theme of this film is non-violence. The common misconception that many people have about violence is that it takes courage and fearlessness to be violent. However, Gandhi challenged this misconception by stating that non-violence can work for justice and can bring about change without the use of violence. Gandhi believes that using soul force or non-violent practices will result in the best outcome when it comes to law and wanting a change. Although radicals for change in this era of time do not think rationally enough to acknowledge this, the justice they seek would receive better results had they thought in such way.

Gandhi fought against the corrupt governments of society to pursue justice. His deep concern for those in poverty in India gave him the passion to fight against Britain. Gandhi's belief in truth and non-violence brought him many followers who understandably helped bring about a successful campaign that eventually did free Indian's from British ruling and all those in poverty and unjust situations were given the treatment they deserved. Gandhi's pursue for social justice was a step into his goal to self-realization and spirituality.
